After all this time. (Pt. 1)
Pairing- Reader x Wash. (And really mostly all the mains on Chorus😊) Setting- Chorus —————————————————————- Everything you ever thought was yours is now gone. Your friends, family and even your home. You were deserted, no warning was given it all just happened so quickly. And now you can’t even remember any of it. *****
You have no idea how you got here. This place is filled with soldiers, and you must be in the medical sector. Your armor is stacked neatly next to the bed that you lay in. Your now wearing an unfamiliar uniform, a tight black tee and grey shorts. You sit up, using your elbows. You have wires sicking out of you that are connected to machines that stand by your bed. Bloodied bandages wrapped around your legs, and your left shoulder. The pain from sitting up is numbed by whatever is in the IV pumping into your blood stream.
Surveying the room you notice, more cots like yours, almost all of them are filled. You see people you can only assume are medics walking up and down the rows of beds of wounded men and women. But one medic particularly sticks out. Shes not like the other quiet doctors shes, how do you put it….loud. You ignore the obnoxious medic and noticed your bed is the only one surrounded by machines. This makes you feel a little anxious, but also somewhat selfish. Looking back at the loud doctor you see that she’s gazing at you. “Oh, wonderful!” She squeels, while skipping over to your bedside. “You’re awake! Oh, we thought that you would never wake up, and your body would decompose in this bed.” She laughed at her own joke. Her voice was high and shrill. You stare at her confused. “Silly me,” she says holding out her empty hand, the one not holding the clipboard and pill bottles. “I’m Doctor Grey.” She chirps motioning for her outstretched arm. You use your least injured arm and shake her armored hand. “What’s your name, honey?” She questions you while pulling her hand away.
“[Y/n].” You respond looking down. “I think?” Saying your name out loud just felt and sounded so foreign.
Dr. Grey giggles. “Sweetie, is it or is it not your name?” She pulls a pen out of the top of the clipboard and throws all the pill bottles at your feet. She hold the pen at writing position.
“Uh, yeah. I guess it is.” You tell her. She scribbles something on her clipboard, as doors swing open, and three colorful soldiers come storming in. One in dark blue armor, another in orange and the last in maroon. The orange and the maroon are arguing back and forth as the blue fiddles with his fingers. He reminds you of a child. Dr. Grey turn away from you and glares at the men that just walked in. Shaking her head she says, “Boys, what are you doing here, what’s going on?” Grey sets down the clipboard on the foot of your bed and walks over to the arguing pack of soldiers. You see your name printed on the top of the paper connected to the clipboard. With the doctors back turns you lean forward and examine the papers.
NAME- [Y/n]
DOB- [Your birthday]
INJURY(S)- Fractured leg, dislocated shoulder. Minor amnesia.
You stop reading. “Minor amnesia?” You ask yourself.
DOCTOR- Dr. Emily Grey
BROUGHT IN BY- Unknown
LAST VISITED BY- Agent Washington
You drop the clipboard and it collides with the floor and gains everyone’s attention towards you. “Who’s she?” The orange one points.
“Grif, it’s rude to point.” Grey scolds the orange one, who’s name is supposedly Grif. She walks over to you and bends down to pick up the dropped clipboard.
“He’s alive?” You ask Grey, with a hopeful look in your eyes.
“Who?” She questions looking at you.
You sit up and swing your legs over the side of the bed. Your knuckles white from gripping the edge of the cot. “Washington, is he alive?” You demanded.
"Sweetie,” Dr. Grey started. “For the last few days Wash has been asking me that same question. But about you.”
Your shocked. You remember everything. You remember project Freelancer, you remember being assigned a recovery agent after the Meta went loose. And you remember trying to fight the Meta off after you responded to Norths beacon call, but you lost, and you retreated. You only recall bits and pieces so far of staying at command until PFL was shut down. Then you were taken back to the UNSC were you stayed there until they shipped you off to respond to yet another distress call. And up till now you had no idea it was for Wash and his so called friends. But before you could land, your ship went haywire and crashed. Now you are here. “I remember everything.” You whisper to yourself.
"What was that dear?” Grey asked.
“I remember everything.” You tell her.
*****
Later Grey explained that you landed on a planet called Chorus. She told you who the Reds and Blues are, and reassured you that Carolina is here too, that her death was fake. She told a story about two mercs that plotted planetary genocide, but they were defeated. She said that Wash went on a scout mission to check for anymore enemy’s lingering around the bases. So she would inform him that you were awake as soon as he got back. Before the doctor left she handed you a picture. “This fell out of your armor when we were removing it. Thought you might want to see it.” She smiled and then strode away. You looked down at the picture in your hand. It was you, standing in line with the rest if the other freelancers. Everyone in there armor, helmets at their sides. You smile as you remember. A tear falls down your cheek. You fold up the picture and place it on the table next to your bed. You just close your eyes, when the doors slam open again. You recognize the face. Shes holding her helmet at her side. Red hair and her striking green eyes look around the room. When they find your face she runs over. She hugs you. You can tell she’s carful about your wounds.
"I thought I would never see you again!” She exclaims letting go of you. She pulls out a stool hiding behind one of the machines, sits and places her helmet on her lap. “Okay, (freelancer name) what happened to you after project Freelancer?” You shoot her a glance.
“I forgot about that name.” You muttered.
"Oh, I’m sorry.” She says looking down. “Do you go by your actual name now?” She asks looking up, some of her hair falling loose from her ponytail and in front of her eye.
"Yeah, its just easier.”
“Well you seem pretty excited about seeing Wash again.” She implies, pushing the hair out of her face.
“Its just, you knew him and I were, uh, close.” You stop and look at her. “You knew that right?” Sitting up and stretching your legs out you wait for an answer from her.
“Well, I noticed you two hung out alot, and always sat close to each other would it be the cafeteria, ship, or even just class.” She paused. “Wait, you two were a thing?” She shoots up.
"Um,” you say. “I don’t really know, we never even went out.” Your cheeks flush red and your hands start to sweat. You think this is kind of an awkward conversation with someone you haven’t seen in years, and not to mention thought was dead. “I just, really want to see him again.” You sigh. Carolina grabs your hand. “[Y/n] he thinks the same.”
*****
“[Y/n]! [Y/n]! Wake up!” A voice calls. Your body shakes and you feel, someone’s hands on your arm. You must have dozed off after Carolina left.
"Hey, cut that out!” You attempt to call out, but it just turns into a groggy whimper. Your eyes slowly open, and the vision is blurry at first but you see an orange figure, the one that’s holding your arm. Another one in full purple armor, and you notice the large blue solder standing next to the purple. Your sight is now clear and you sit up rubbing your head. “What the hell’s going on?” The machines around your bed are now gone and the IV’s have been removed.
“Hey, you wake up. Grey ordered us to move you to your new room.” Grif informed you.
"My new room?” Confusion floods you.
“Yeah, Carolina thought you would be more ‘comfortable’ there. Whatever the hell that means.” Grif tells you motioning to the blue soldier. “Uh, this is Caboose.” He introduces.
"Hello!” Caboose cries, waving his hand. “What is your name!” Before you can answer your question he interrupts. “No wait! Let me guess it!”
"Caboose, stop.” Grif warns.
"No, no it’s fine.” You sit up and rub your eyes. “Ok Caboose, uh guess.” You feel like a kid again playing a guessing name.
"Oh, this is going to be so fun!” Caboose practically jumps up and down. “Um, your name is, not scary lady. No, it’s um, nice lady! Oh is your name nice lady?” He asks you leaning towards you.
You chuckle. “Uh, no Caboose, my name is [Y/n].”
"Yeah, now that we have that worked out,” Grif glares at Caboose. “Caboose go finish bringing the junk that Carolina told us to grab into her room.”
"Okay fine. But I want to talk to the nice lady later!” Caboose shouted while running out of the infirmary.
You hear grif mumble something under his breath.
"So who’s the patient today?” A soldier with the same colour armor as Carolina walks up to the end of your bed.
"Hey, Tucker.” Grif greets the man who you now know as Tucker.
"Hey, Grif who is this?” He looks at you and crosses his arms. “So she bunking with me, right? Haha bow chi-”
"Actually shes my new roommate!” The purple armored man speaks up.
“What?” Both you and Tucker say while shooting your stare at Grif.
"Hey, this was Carolinas call not mine, I’m just the escort.” Grif holds his hands up looking innocent.
“Wait, he’s my ‘roommate’? You ask Grif.
"Yeah, Carolina thought you shouldn’t have to stay here anymore and Grey thought that you still needed a doctor around checking on you, so they roomed you with Doc.” He plops down on the stool next to your bed.
“Wait, your name is ‘Doc’?” You look at the purple soldier.
"Well it’s actually Frank but they all call me Doc. I guess old habits die hard.” He shrugs his shoulders.
"And I’m going to be sharing a room. With him?” You scowl at Grif.
“Hey, like I said before. Not my decision.” He says flatly.
"Yeah, babe if it were up to me you’d be staying in my room!” Tucker shared.
“I swear to god, if you call me babe again, I’ll cut off your most valuable asset.” You smirk, crossing your arms and leaning back into your pillows.
“Okay everyone let’s just calm down, and move our new friend here into her new room.” Explains Doc.
"I’m not moving until I get to see Wash.” You growl.
"Well turns out Wash is going to be out longer than expected, so for the time being Carolina wanted you to be more at home.” Doc reassures.
Rage suddenly fills you. “You think I’m going to just call this place home, I barely know anyone here! I haven’t even stepped a foot outside this hospital! Oh yeah and everyone I thought was dead, is now somehow alive! So how do you think I’m just going to make this place home, when everytime I think I can settle down and stay low for a while, my ‘home’ gets taken away from me!” After you finish shouting, you wipe away tears that have collected around your eyes. You look at the guys. Tucker stares at his feet and Grif stood up and backed away from you. Doc, well Doc placed his hand on your shoulder.
"Hey, [Y/n] it’s going to be alright.” Doc comforts you.
"Thanks.” You choke back more tears.
"Um, let’s just bring you to your room.” Grif murmurs.
“Yeah, that would be a good idea.” Tucker tells you. You swing your legs overside the bed again and get ready to stand up for the first time in days.
“Do you need help?” Doc asks holding out his arm out to you.
Pushing it away you say aggressively. “No, I’m fine.” You place your feet on the ground and push yourself up. Standing now you feel the blood rush out of your head. You balance yourself by leaning against the wall. Doc moves out of your way so you can walk. The three of them eyeing you cautiously. You take a step and then another. Doc clapping and cheering you on. You even crack a smile.
Step after step it gets easier. Until a shooting pain strikes up your right calf and into your femur. Your leg gives out from under you and you fall to the floor. But before you could crash and probably cause more damage to yourself, someone wraps their arms around your waist and catches you. It’s Tucker.
“You know, most times when I hold a chick by the waist we end up making out.” Tucker whispers in your ear.
Pulling yourself closer to his ear you whisper, “in your dreams lover boy.” You mock. You pull away from his grasp, but still use his shoulder as support.
"Well I know what I’ll be dreaming about tonight then.” Tucker boasts.
"Shut up you creep.” You jab him in the stomach.
"So we good to go?” Grif asks. “Cause I’m getting kinda hungry.”
"Yeah I think we are.” You look around the infirmary and hobble to the door. Doc pushes it open and you see the outside. You’ve forgotten how good fresh air feels, especially with your armor off.
*****
The walk to the living quarters was longer than you expected. Tucker ended up carrying you. No matter how much you hated it, you enjoyed getting the stain off your leg. Doc keeps going on and on about how great of a roommate he will be. It’s giving you another headache. “How much farther?” You ask out loud, interrupting Doc.
"Well, we would have been there already, if someone didn’t have to stop at the mess hall to grab a snack.” Doc answers glaring at Grif.
"What,” Grif defends with his mouth full. “I was hungry!” He declares.
"Whatever, were here anyway.” Tucker blurts in. He sets you down on your feet. “Maybe we can do that again sometime?” He flirts.
"Yeah, maybe not.” You reply. He lets out a small sigh. Doc walks between you two and fiddles with the keypad on the side of the door.
The door slides open and the four of you are greeted with darkness. Doc moves to go switch on the lights, when they turn on themselves.
You see, a Caboose shouting surprise while waving his hands back and forth. You see, a red and maroon coloured soldiers standing near each other on the far side of the room, looking more than less enthusiastic. Standing next to the red soldier a brown coloured one shakes his head, looking disappointed. A lightish red coloured man, shouts surprise along with Caboose. And finally Carolina. She leans against the wall holding a small box.
"What’s all this.” You ask stepping into the room ignoring the pain in your leg.
Carolina walks up to you and puts an arm around your shoulder. “Well after Caboose heard that you were being moved he wouldn’t stop begging me to give you a surprise party.” She points to the lightish red soldier. “That’s Donut, he put this all together.”
Your moved but you still scenced something was wrong. “Oh, thanks guys.” You appreciated.
“Oh,” she points to the red, maroon and brown armored soldiers. “That’s Sarge, Simmons, and Lopez.” They all waved accept Sarge who approached you.
"So, your the famous [Y/n] or Agent (Freelancer name).” He has a strong southern accent.
"I just go by [Y/n] now, sir.” You notify him.
"Well, then little lady, welcome to the family.” He stomps off back to talk to Simmons.
”[Y/n]!” You hear Caboose call. You turn around and see him running at you. You think he’s going to knock you down but instead, he wraps you in his arms and lifts your feet off the ground. “Oh, did you like the surprise? Were you surprised?” He kept asking, and you assumed wouldn’t put you down until you answer his questions.
“Ye-yes Caboose.” You struggle for air. “I loved it!” He finally sets you down and you gasp for breath.
"Yay!” He cheers and skips off to find someone else.
“So you like your new place?” Doc comes up from behind and pat’s you on the back. You look around.
“Yeah, I guess I do.”
“Hey, [Y/n] can I talk to you for a minuet. Outside?” Carolina pulls you away from Doc.
"Sure C.” You respond. While everyone is distracted while talking or eating whatever Donut made, Carolina pulled you outside. “What’s up?”
“Look, inside this box is a recording. I sent one to Wash telling him you were awake, and this is his response. It says it’s for you, and I thought you might want to hear it first.” She hands you the small box and hugs you. “He’d not dead okay. At least we hope he’s not. After Felix and Locus a few of their men stayed back attempting to finish what they started.” She pulls away from you but keeps her grasp on your forearms. “They have gotten stronger and somehow those asses managed to capture Wash. This recording is before he was taken, but up till now.” She paused. “We don’t know.” She lets go and takes off her helmet. Her eyes red from holding in cries. “Just let me know what it says.” Then she walked off.
Your horrified, you don’t know if you should watch it or wait. This is all to much right now. But you would love to hear his voice again. You open the box. A hologram appears, it’s him, it’s Wash.
”[Y/n]!” He was really the only one that remembered to call you that. “I don’t even know how to start. Except all I can say is how happy and excited I was when they found you. Even though you had just crashed from space you still looked like you. I missed you for these last year’s, I remember,” he pauses to laugh. “I remember us back on the MOI, you were the only one that REALLY cared about me. I remember all the mission’s we were sent on together, the times we trained together. I even remember the last time we saw each other. That day was one of the worst ever. Of all time.” The hologram is interrupted by gunshots and holographic Wash spins around. “[Y/n] I have to go. But I swear, I will get back to you. We’ve waited long enough. And we didn’t even say goodbye.” The hologram shuts down and retreats back into the box. Your eyes swell with tears, and you feel extremely cold. You sit with your back on the outside of the living quarters wall. “Just hurry up and get back, David.” You whisper.
