New York, New York
Finally….The Chouen has come to New York City!!! I’ve been talking about this move since I was in high school, and this month I finally did it. Chefchouen was apparently painted blue by Jewish migrants in the 1930s. It was originally a more Islamic green but the tradition of painting it blue has stuck around even though almost all the Jewish inhabitants of Morocco left in 1948 and 1967.
It can also be called Chouen and it was a very chill place (possibly because of all the weed and hash that the city is partially famous for. we were offered hash several times within the first couple hours of being there). It was really beautiful because of the blue and much quieter than some of the more mainstream destinations. People were really nice and we really weren't harassed much (although we had guys with us which always helps). I didn't buy much but there were some great small shops and if I had any money left I would have.
We took the trip to Chouen from Fes via bus. It really is the only way to access Chouen because it is tucked away in the mountains. Passing through the mountains was beautiful both there and the way back. We didn't have the best weather but it didn't rain too hard. The bus trip there was somewhat eventful in a bad way since the bumpy ride made someone in the back puke. Poor Stan had some get on his stuff. But once we got there the trip was really nice.
