Not having many encounters with black authors until high school & college (when I actively could choose what I wanted to read), this was another book that I stumbled upon much later than I would have liked. I hadn’t really gravitated towards poetry, so a choreopoem was completely off my radar. Something about reading this for the first just felt different, like I was seeing bits and pieces of myself on a page. I even liked the Tyler Perry adaptation a few years ago, which is hard to watch in places, but still a great movie. This will always be one of my favorite reads and I hope it continues as I make my way through the rest of her work.
