During the calm sunset, Buddhist prayer flags peacefully dance with the breeze, they move in waves sowing blessings over Cholatse's base camp, protecting those who rest and those who ascend the high mountain slopes. As we arrived at Cholatse's Base Camp in October 1993 I developed a bronchitis that worsened at high altitude so decided to rest while my teammates continued their climb. Once recovered 6 days after their departure I was left with a difficult decision, either to return home without doing an attempt, or a Solo Ascent. I chose the last and set off after leaving a note in my tent asking my teammates to go home if I did not return in three days. Steep, Unforgiving and Intimidating…. following my teams route I climbed unroped, fast and committed; and on October 23rd reached the knife-blade summit that dropped almost vertically 13,000 feet to either side. In the photo by Ed Webster; climbing alone… like a tiny pinprick on the ramp leading to the sky, I felt Insignificant…. in awe with the grandeur and majesty of the mountains embracing me. And in the Selfie, the ridge reflected in my sunglasses became the testimony of the summit I had reached. I learned a lot while overcoming obstacles but more importantly, I learned So Much More while overcoming my Fears. Cuando llegamos al campo base del Cholatse en Octubre de 1993, desarrollé una bronquitis que empeoró día a día. Para recuperarme decidí descansar mientras mis compañeros continuaban su ascenso. Ya recuperado seis días mas tarde, tuve que afrontar una dificil decisión, regresar a casa sin intentarlo… o subir Solo. Elegí lo ultimo y partí después de dejar una nota en mi tienda diciendo a mis amigos que se fueran si no regresaba en tres días. Empinada, implacable e intimidante… siguiendo la ruta de ascenso de mis compañeros, subí sin cuerda, rápido y comprometido; y el 23 de octubre llegué a la cima en un filo de medio metro de ancho que cae vertical 4000 metros a cada lado. En la fotografía de Ed Webster; apenas visible en la rampa que conduce al cielo, me sentí insignificante…. en contraste con la grandeza y majestuosidad de las montañas que me abrazan. Y en la selfie, la cresta reflejada en mis anteojos se convirtió en el testimonio de la cumbre que había alcanzado.
