Echinocereus chisoensis is listed as an endangered species with less than 1,000 individuals occurring in Big Bend National Park, and the Mexican states of Coahuila and possibly Durango. Its main threats are the invasive grass species Pennisetum ciliare and illegal collection. Pollination is highly dependent upon the bee species Diadasia rinconis and most occurrences are thought to be mature plants. Yesterday, my specimen, grown from legally acquired seed and gifted to me by Sul Ross State University in Alpine, Texas, bloomed for the first time in its life cycle. You can see why it's sought after by collectors.
