This ted talk made me come back to it more than 10 times. I have shared this video to all of my family members plus friends.
The topic is extremely fascinating and insightful but what inspires me about this Ted talk is the speaker ‘Chipp Kidd’.
He’s simple passion for book design along with his charisma makes me fall in love with book design as well as produce some of my own. He is someone that is able to confidently make an impression on someone.
For 25 years Chipp has vdeoted his life to designing books. He wanted to be a garlic designer but apron arrival after a lot of interviews all he was offered was ato be an assistant to the art director art a book publisher. he was completely clues about hat he was going into.
His job was to ask this question ‘ what do stories look like’
His entire job is about first impressions.
But how Chipp recalls stations and experiences to you is what is the most fascinating. for instcnace he cleverly explains:
‘August Burroughs wrote a memoir called ‘dry’ and it’s about his time in rehab. in his 20s he was an hot-shot ad executive, and as mad men has told us a raging alcoholic. His co workers did an intervention and told him you are going to rehab or you will be fired and you will die. Now to me this was always gonna be a typographic solution, what I would call the opposite of type 101. what does that mean? Usually on the fur introduction to typography you get the assignment of, choose a word and make it look like what is says. that’s type 101. very simple stuff. This is going to be the opposite of that. I want this book to look like it’s lying to you, desperately and hopelessly the way an alcoholic would. The answer was the most low tech thing you can imagine. I set up the type, I printed it out on an Epsom printer with water-solouble ink, taped it to the wall and threw a bottle of water on it. Presto!
He is amazing at convincing you and drawing you in. He is able to achieve your full attention. That I admire.
