The 1867 Strike reminds me how important it is to stand up for fairness. The Chinese workers may not have won the strike, but they made history by trying. Their fight helps us understand why labor rights matter for everyone.

When the Chinese workers went on strike, the Central Pacific Railroad company responded by cutting off food supplies to the striking workers, hoping that hunger would compel them to return to work

In 1867, more than 2,000 Chinese workers stopped working to protest unfair treatment. They wanted better pay and had a better condition. Even though the strike didn’t succeed, it showed how brave and united they were. These workers helped build the transcontinental railroad, and their actions are an important part of American history.

Chinese workers lived in poor conditions. Sleeping in tents, surviving on minimal food, and enduring the cold in the Sierra Nevada. While white workers received higher pay and better housing, Chinese workers did the most difficult and dangerous jobs.

They had labored through dangerous terrain, snow, and heat but they were still paid less than white workers. This moment marked one of the earliest organized labor strikes in American history.
