Spring always feels like a fresh start. Longer days, brighter skies and that feeling that it’s finally time to stop putting things off and get moving again.
And if you’re the parent of a child model — or thinking about applying to a modelling agency for the first time — spring is one of the best times of year to refresh a modelling portfolio.
At Models Direct, we always encourage our models to keep their portfolios updated. Why? Because your portfolio is the first thing clients see when choosing models for campaigns, adverts, websites and promotional work. If the images are old, inaccurate or no longer reflect how your child looks today, it can seriously reduce the chances of being selected.
Children change quickly. Hairstyles change. Smiles change. Height changes. Confidence changes. Even personality starts to shine through differently in photographs after just a few months.
Spring gives parents the perfect opportunity to capture fresh, natural images. The lighting is better, parks and outdoor spaces look brighter and children are often happier being outside after the darker winter months. Natural smiles and relaxed expressions always stand out far more than overly posed images.
It’s also an important season commercially. Brands are already planning ahead for summer campaigns, holidays, family promotions and outdoor advertising. Having an up-to-date portfolio ready at the right time can make all the difference.
One of the biggest mistakes we see is portfolios being left untouched for months or even years. It doesn’t matter how photogenic a child is if the portfolio no longer reflects reality. Clients want to know exactly who they’re booking.
For parents of aspiring child models, think of a portfolio as your child’s modelling CV. It should grow and evolve with them.
The good news is that portfolio updates don’t need to be complicated or expensive. Natural daylight, relaxed clothing and genuine expressions are often exactly what commercial clients are looking for.
If you think your child could be suited to commercial modelling, spring might just be the perfect moment to take that first step.
