specifically a photo of fried squid legs coming out of his mouth for his cousin who is not as adventurous an eater as him
also note, he shared appetizers, had half a plate of etouffee, half an order of wilted greens, and a quarter plate of his grandmother’s pasta. and then half of my creme brulee.
i suspect he would have kept eating if we let him.
we walked over to the community center to hang out and pass the time. turns out the they have a small radio station there. i was explaining the sliders when the DJ invited us in to look at the equipment and chat.
then, he asked the boys to each record a “hello message” that is now part of the permanent rotation on the island. we have not heard the boys’ voices, but we are told that they will get played repeatedly
a nice bystander, seeing my obvious noob status with the selfie, offered to take a nicer fmaily photo for us.
and we all had put shirts on over our bib numbers. oh well. the boys are now big enough that the idea of the number is not the highlight of the activity (which is also nice).
Child1 had a good race. We started too far back in the pack, so the first km was a constant fight to pass walkers and make progress through the crowd. In fact, we did not stop passing walkers until about the 2km mark, which was surprising to me. They conveners did a very bad job marking expected times at the start line.
Child1 set pace and i followed him the whole race. we had a pretty slow and irritating 6:40 first split, and then dropped to a fairly stead 5:30 ish for the middle three kms. The final km was closer to 5:10, so it was a decent speed. I expected this to be the race that he was faster than me (I have not been training), but it was not. I might have another year or two on him yet.
Also, as a road race, I noticed how horrible the surface of the roads were. I also twisted my ankle pretty nicely around the 3km mark. It started to get quite sore around 4.5km but I was pleased that I had a decent jog. I have these delusions that I could run 4:30 splits if I were motivated to be fast...

luge.
the q’tn luge (and its sibling sites around nz) are a veritable institution. it would not have been right to leave the country without riding. child2 was SUPER excited that he was tall enough to ride alone. which meant that after a training/supervisor ride with the boys, they were off on their own.
woot!
from earlier in the summer. we set down some 8x8 posts so that the boys could set up their hammocks in the sun/shade at any time in the day.
the boys have been sleeping in the tent since the start of July. We are preparing for winter camping.
dog2 has been sleeping with child1 and child2. it is pretty great.
