MY BOOK REVIEW:

During a time when women had little rights, and education involving math and science for a woman was equally frowned upon, the drama of between Lord Byron, bad-boy poet and Anne Isabella Noel Byron, 11th Baroness Wentworth and Baroness Byron (née Milbanke; 17 May 1792 – 16 May 1860), nicknamed Annabella and commonly known as Lady Byron came to a head and the two separated.

From their marriage, the only legitimate child, Ada (Augusta Ada Byron) was born and then swiftly whisked away by her mother, to protect her from her father’s behavior involving terrible choices in life. The story then switches to be told from the perspective of Ada.

Because of a mother’s bitterness, her fear that her daughter may take after her father, every creative notion was squashed before realization.  Focus on math and science was the primary education Ada was allowed.  Deemed a woman ahead of her time, it is no wonder that her intellect prompted this author to presume she helped in Babbage’s research and concepts of the “first computer.”

The book is a long read and oftentimes, a dry read, but full of well-researched information and ideas. I can truly see those who love historical fiction being drawn to and enjoying it. The author’s voice is compelling and enjoyable.  The plot is well-laid out and flows seamlessly. The story of Ada Lovelace is truly mesmerizing.
