Women in Chess
So y’all are probably at least vaguely aware that top level chess is dominated by men. Only 37 women are included in the 1,928 people who have been made Grandmasters since FIDE began officiating the title in 1950, with no women grandmasters at all until Nona Gaprindashvili was awarded the title in 1978.
Why is this? Well, before any idiots open their mouths, it has nothing to do with biology. In fact, a widely cited statistical study of chess players conducted in 2009 concluded that the differences in rankings were almost entirely accounted for by the difference between how many men play chess versus how many women play chess. Fewer women players means that fewer women reach the very top levels. Who knows, maybe this will be the generation to change all that...
Anyway, if you’re looking for inspiration there are a couple Youtube channels I recommend checking out...
Anna Rudolf
I know Hungarian International Master and Woman Grandmaster Anna Rudolf from her brilliant video lessons on chess.com but she also has a youtube channel. Some media have styled her a “real life Beth Harmon” and she’s had fun playing with this. She’s done some really interesting videos on AI and chess and if you look around, you’ll probably find some of her tutorials and lessons which are worth their weight in gold.
Alexandra Botez
American-Canadian Woman FIDE Master Alexandra Botez has a Youtube channel with her younger sister Andrea in which she does such things as play a workout/chess hybrid against The Mountain. Following the success of The Queen’s Gambit, the BBC interviewed the sisters about the show and starting out in chess.
