I have to say I've recently gotten back on my chess kick and I just stumbled across your interview animatic a few days ago. I love the emotion you manage to convey with both the colors and expressions. I feel both Anatoly and Freddie are both assholes (Anatoly for abandoning his family and cheating on his wife and Freddie for being Freddie), but that eye color change he has during the home video segment to blue is so heartbreaking and beautiful. Would you ever consider doing an animatic for The Quartet, Dangerous and Difficult Times, One Night in Bangkok or Pity the Child #2?

The lighting shift from red to blue was something I immediately knew I wanted. I wanted the feeling that Freddie had trapped Anatoly with the guilt of his infidelity. It went from a heated confrontation to a cold slap of reality, and the sense of remorse should have been evident on Anatoly's face.
I definitely want to do more animatics - Pity the Child #2 is one of my top choices. I might do fragments of the other songs you listed. I'm also really interested in The Deal/No Deal because in the concert version, every character in the show shows up. It's a concisely arranged montage, and since at the end it transitions directly into Pity the Child #2, I think it's a good choice.

Thank you so much! Iām sure I will do more Chess in the future, especially any songs with Freddie (surprise, surprise). Right now itās in my backlog of fandom things to eventually finish, in between my day job and looking for more animation work/beefing up my portfolio, but hey, now that you mention it I think Chess might actually make a good dummy pitch bible! Part of what I love about drawing it is the black-and-white theming of theĀ āChess Kings,ā and all the ways you can exaggerate their respective emotions and situations.
And Act 2 Freddie is really fun to emote for because he acts more slick than he does in Act 1, all while being more of a wreck than ever before (Cue āPity the Childā). I wanted to doĀ āThe Interviewā first because he and Anatoly had to have this veneer of professionalism, yet itās obvious to us, the audience, that they hate each other. I donāt think Freddie especially likes Walter or any of the Global Television people either, itās just that he hates Anatoly more.Ā
If I do more songs, my top ones would be Freddieās and Florenceās part of āMeranoā (āWhat a scene, what a joy!ā), that one bit at the end of āMountain Duetā (āWhoād ever think it, such a very pretty settingā), so many good parts in āThe Deal/No Dealā but that track is so long...and of course āPity the Childā because weāve gotta completely emotionally cripple Freddie before he can grow as a person.

I just discovered your animatic of "The Interview" from chess and loved the level of detail on Anatoly and Freddie's faces when the video of the Sergievsky family. My husband was the one who got me into Chess, but I was first exposed to the musical via the audio recordings of the 2018 show in Washington DC. What are your favorite songs from Chess? My favorites are "One Night in Bangkok", "The Arbiter", and "The Interview".
Thank you for the compliment! I donāt think thereās a wrong answer to this question. Those are some of my favorites too! And because there have been so many different recordings, so you have your pick for favorites. The original 1984 Arbiter, the 2009 Arbiter, and even the off-the-rails Swedish Arbiter each provide a different flavor. I also like The Deal (No Deal) - the 2009 version is 10 minutes, you get to hear from every character, and you get several reprises of other important melodies in the show. In fact if you wanted to sum up the arc of the show in one track, I think thatād be the one. And directly afterwards, Freddie sings Pity the Child #2, so thereās no end to the emotional rollercoaster. Iām glad youāre having fun with Chess!

Can I say that it made me quite happy to find another person talking about Chess the musical? It's by far one of my favorites but no one I've talked to has heard of it. I saw you did an animatic of "The Interview" and it was really good. I especially loved the way you did gradient backgrounds that changed with the song's tone. Anyway, I hope you have a nice day!
