Been seeing Of Montreal' 1997 folk ditty "Tim I wish you were born a girl" making the rounds on the internet and I'm kinda a lil peeved about people always waving it off as like oh you can be gay you know or Tim should transition or whatever, I think it's so easy to brush off how difficult figuring out your sexuality is when you've already done it, like it seems so simple now, but besides the fact that it's the 90's and Tim seems to be a stand-in for a very average straight guy, it's very obviously a song about longing and feeling confused and most of all feeling that you'll be feeling longing and confused for the rest of your life and nothing will ever change. The entire song he constructs elaborate fantasies of the wonderful life he could have with Tim if only he was a girl, it's very clear he loves him deeply and then resigns himself saying it would just never be the same. The song is meant to be a gut punch and it's quite possible the narrator will never figure it out, it's even quite possible the narrator really is straight and will never be happy (personally I don't think that's the case but that's how you're supposed to feel) and by brushing the narrators hypocrisy off as him being stupid because he could just be gay is really misinterpreting it, like he knows he COULD be gay but due to his own biases he brushes it off at the end. Idk. It annoys me when people try to provide solutions to sad art like sometimes you gotta sit with it and feel the helplessness or else you won't get it
