Turns out Jongdae had already been thinking of the lyrics. You guys were alone in the studio bouncing ideas off of each other when he told you what he was thinking for the concept.

“So hear me out on this. Have you ever just felt connected to someone?”

Looking up from your notebook, you realized he was turned to face you on the couch with his elbows on his knees and hands holding his head as he tilted it asking you the question. You couldn’t tear your eyes away and your mind went blank.

“Y/N? Are you sure you’re okay from before?” At your lack of response, he leaned into you and raised a hand to check if you had a fever. Feeling his rough palm touch you you flinched and realized he had asked you a question.

Blushing, you turned away to grab your water. “You mean like destiny or love at first sight? I don’t know if I believe in that.”

“I don’t mean the fairy tale version of destiny that says people fall I love instantly. I mean meeting someone that you feel comfortable around and that you find you want to take care of, someone you want to protect.”

Turning back to your notebook to avoid eye contact, you doodled while responding. “I think I believe in that version of fate more than the fairy tale one. A connection that you might not realize but that makes your heart flutter in recognition of someone who will be important to you, I guess is what I’ve thought of.”

“Exactly!” he said, jumping off the couch to pace around the room. “And it’s a connection that makes you think of the person without realizing why.”

“And makes you react emotionally to them without thinking of your reasons,” you chimed in softly, smiling at him bouncing around the room as the ideas started to flow. “Someone you just feel yourself drawn to.”

“And no matter how often you go in circles chasing each other…” “… or the feeling you get when you are with them…” you said as you thought you both were on the same page. “It always comes back to that one emotion you had that started it all.”

“Wait. Now you’ve lost me.”

Coming back to the couch with a notepad of his own, he sat next to you and started scribbling down words.

“Sunbae?” “Hold on hold on! I want to get this down before I forget it.”

You tried to lean to sneak a peek at what he was writing, but couldn’t see over his arms. Bouncing your knees impatiently, you sat and waited for him to come back to you.

You watched the little dimple on his face from his profile as it kept popping in and out of his cheek as he mumbled to himself. Your eyes slipped down to watch him bite his lip as he’d pause, thinking of what to write next. You don’t know how long you’d been staring at him when he spoke up again.

“Y/N.” “Hmm?” you responded, refocusing your eyes on his just to realize that one of you must have moved closer (probably you but you wouldn’t admit it) because his face seemed only a breath away.

“That moment? That emotion?” he started, holding your gaze. “It’s that everytime you look at them, your heart flutters. Everytime you see them, you want to protect them. Everytime you see them smile, your heart will stop. Because you love them.”

“Their eyes,” he said, slightly leaning in.

“Their scent,” he said, making you take a breath in.

“Their lips,” he said, your eyes dropping to his, unsure if his eyes were doing the same as you both leaned in.

You were a breath away when you heard a quick knock on the door which caused you both to jump apart. Someone yelled “room service” before throwing the door open.

You quickly turned to grab your water, sure your cheeks were red. You felt Jongdae get up off the couch and head over to whomever had just walked in.

“Ah hyung! Thank you! Y/N! Didn’t I tell you I’d make Xiumin get us food?”

You chugged down the rest of your water and ran a quick hand through your hair before getting up to greet him.

“Ah! So this is Y/N! I’ve heard so much about you!”

“Nice to meet you. And all good things I hope,” you said, knowing the media could sometimes run a little wild.

“All great things if what Dae keeps saying can be trusted.”

You whipped your head to look at Jongdae when you realized he’d been talking about you. He just gave you an unabashed smile and shrugged his shoulders. “What can I say? I have a great duet partner and I wanted to brag about it?”

“Oh come on! We’ve only met twice now! How could you know that we’d be good partners?” you laugh at him.

“Sometimes you just know,” he said with a soft smile crinkling his eyes and making (your favorite) dimples appear.

“Uh… guys? Food? Me? I’m right here..” Xiumin interrupted awkwardly.

After getting the food from Xiumin, the three of you sat down to eat. Jongdae didn’t make any more strange comments after that, but you both kept catching each other’s eyes over the food.

Besides the tension in the air between you two, the three of you had fun eating and laughing and talking. It was rare that you were able to hang out with other idols from the industry because the media was always watching and ready to spin anything. But here, in this studio, you didn’t feel like and idol. You felt normal as Xiumin and Jongdae kept telling you each other’s embarrassing stories and you laughed so hard you almost (almost!) spit your drink all over the table.

After lunch, you and Jongdae really got down to work. He listened to the melody you had been playing around with and the two of you decided on how to split up parts in the song. Since the man in the drama seemed to be the one leaving and chasing the girl throughout the drama, you both decided to have Jongdae sing the main verses and then you’d sing the chorus as a sort of reassuring response.

By the time the sun had set, you two were exhausted but happy with what you had come up with. Putting away your notepad and phone charger, you moved to grab your phone to tell your manager you were done so you could head home.

“Don’t forget your hoody,” Jongdae sad as he stepped up behind you holding it.

“Oh, thanks!” you said, turning around to grab it from him. He just tightened his hold on it and shook his head with a smirk. Knowing full well what he meant, you rolled your eyes so he could see, earning you a belly laugh, and let him help you into it.

You could feel his warm body step up behind you as he pulled the jacket up over your shoulders. You were just starting to  miss the feeling of his hands on your shoulders when you felt him gather your hair at the nape of your neck to pull it out from underneath the jacket. Your breath hitched as you felt him pat it down gently and rest a hand on your back.

“I’m really glad you decided to work with me on this song,” he whispered in your ear.

Feeling confident, you turned to look at him over your shoulder. When your eyes locked, you felt it again. Your heart fluttered and you didn’t want to look away. Pulling a soft smile, you said “I am too.”
