Beyond the shed door
“Just…Go.”
Chell watched as the elevator slowly ascended, GLaDOS slowly disappearing from her line of sight. Her mouth shut tight and her eyes cold and emotionless, she prepared herself for whatever came next. She expected death, to be pulled back down, to wake up from this dream. The last thing she expected was turrets. Not shooting, but singing.
“…”
As their voices slowly faded into silence, Chell felt a pang of emotion in her heart. Compassion? For the AI who she once believed to be a heartless killer. A cruel monster with no emotions. But now…She felt as if she was leaving a old friend behind. They would both be alone. Chell put her hand to the glass, her eyes softening. She didn’t want to leave…In this hell she spent so long trying to escape…..She had found home.
“..!”
She turned away as the door opened, bright light flooding in. She took a small step forward, She was surrounded by golden wheat and a bright, cloudless sky. She took another small step, running one of the stalks of wheat under her finger. ‘So this is outside….’
*SLAM*
Chell whipped around to see she shed door slam closed, only to reopen a few moments later. And from that door, was thrown a dirty, charred, Companion cube. ‘She kept it….All this time…’ Chell’s eyes watered slightly as she hugged the cube, resting her head on it. It was only after a few minutes that she looked up into the camera on the shed, mouthing a silent ‘Thank you’. There was no response.
….
So Chell left. She began her journey through the seemingly endless fields of wheat, bringing the cube with her.
“ Goodbye…Chell.”
GLaDOS spoke on deaf ears, knowing no one would hear her. Her best test subject and her only friend…The only human she ever cared for…Was gone.
Years passed. Seasons came and went. And with them GLaDOS had tried to forget the mute human who occupied her thoughts. Testing wasn't the same. The robots were pitiful. They didn’t get mad when she insulted them…They didn’t fear death. They didn’t have that fire in their eyes, willing them to survive. Not like she did.
It took her seven years to find the old shed again. Not once had she let the companion cube leave her side. A reminder of her time in Aperture. Now…She was going home. Wether that meant death by turrets or death by neurotoxin, She wanted to do one last thing. See a old friend.
When GLaDOS saw a human approach her shed, she could’ve sworn she was malfunctioning. So she turned away. ‘There’s no sense crying over every mistake.’ The human was gone. This was just Caroline playing tricks on her….
“…I’ve come home….”
A small voice, gruff and gravelly from lack of use. But unmistakably…Hers. Her human. Just beyond the shed door.
“…..Welcome back…..Lunatic.”
I can't be the only one who thought of GLaDOS.
No one mourns the Wicked!
Another Person: No one cries: "They won't return!"
All: No one lays a lily on their grave
Man: The good man scorns the Wicked!
Women: Through their lives, our children learn
All: What we miss When we misbehave
Galinda: And goodness knows The Wicked's lives are lonely Goodness knows The Wicked die alone It just shows, when you're wicked, You're left only On your own...
All: Yes, goodness knows The Wicked's lives are lonely Goodness knows The Wicked cry alone Nothing grows for the wicked They reap only What they've sown
[I just got a sudden craving for ChellDOS but ideas are gone
