Hmmm.... Are you doing continental or English knitting? I do continental (where you move your yarn from the left needle to the right needle). I recommend looking at youtube videos if you want to see how it works. I learned how to cast on using youtube videos, so you can just type in "How to make a knit stitch english/continental style.
