Facebook comment I made
I made this comment on a status about Christians. This status was posted by a woman who is transgender, and it basically said that all the bullying, hate, and pain she experienced because of her gender identity was caused by Christians. Then many christian people told her that they were Christian and not like “that” and her anger wasn’t fair to them.
I’m posted my comment not because I am super proud of it, but because I’m ashamed of how long it took me to be able to think this way and to articulate it to other people. I am posting it also to remind myself to never be one of those people who police how other people express their frustration of the systems and of the oppression, racism, or discrimination they face. I still feel that defenseness rear up sometimes when I read posts about “white people”, and I’m trying to teach myself not to be that way. It’s having to reverse all the crap I was taught the first 25 years of my life.
“I think people in a group of power have problems separating themselves when someone from a marginalized group speaks out about their pain or fights back. They feel that they deserve to be told that they are the exception. White people need to correct people of color if they don’t add the disclaimer- some, not all, etc. to their complaints of institutional racism. Straight, CIS people demand disclaimers and exceptions when something is said about experiencing homophobia and heterocentrism in this world, and Christians feel the need to be told that they are good Christians, not like those bad Christians, when a victim who has been hurt by the Christian nation as a whole speaks out. I say let someone who has been hurt by groups in power, ie. Christians, to say what they need to say about that institution to heal, and if you don’t fit into what is being said, congratulations. Don’t demand acknowledgment for every act of decency and kindness. Try to change the system you are a part of that is currently oppressing another marginalized group- that will change the perception. Do not tell the person that is being oppressed, bullied, and beat up how to speak out about their pain. I’m sorry I wrote a rant.”
