HE HAD COME to study with the warlock whose legend was only spread in these parts thanks to the druids. I doing so, Kol had to also play nice with others around, and since MERLIN lived in the castle, he saw everyone who was there. Stories had been told ( and, frankly, some compelling had been done ) of how Kol was a distant cousin, and he sat now in the musty library, turning the page to a meticulously-detailed tome of the kingdom’s history. He had to entertain himself while Merlin was off doing lord-knows-what, and though he’d heard the rustling of skirts when they’d neared the library, he hadn’t looked up until the door opened. He stood, as custom here dictated, and offered the stiff bow Merlin had insisted he use despite Kol’s sneer that he existed outside of such pomp and circumstance. “Good morning,” he offered. “I was filling my time before my cousin was free,” he said as explanation. “Did you have the same idea?”

It's one of those phrases you hear often on a film set. "Check the gate!" When I was a little girl following my mother around the various film and television sets in Wilmington, North Carolina, I didn't give much thought to this command. I'd already followed the, "Quiet on the set!" order by stopping wherever I stood and stopping mid conversation. Among the unspoken rules were; no bothering anyone, no running in front of a filming camera and no pranks. I knew how to behave, but as I grew older I started to learn more about the process. The more I learned, the more enamored I became. But, "Check the gate" was one that took a while. Which is why I find it entirely humorous that while recently rewatching a season 2 episode of Chuck, I yelled to an empty room, "Check the gate!"
It reminded me of my first trip to Guatemala. Yes, I have that tremendous photo of Manuel from the orphanage, but before that I had a while day where I didn't think to check my gate. That's right. One. Whole. Day.
Thankfully, I arrived on a Sunday, and we were all taking a "free day" to relax before the work-week began. So, I have lots of photos from the beach with black sand that have this obnoxious little speck on them. I didn't check the gate.
It doesn't seem that significant in the moment, but when you get home and notice all those photos have a speck that has to be photoshopped, it can be quite maddening. I can only imagine how the individual responsible for checking the gate on that episode of Chuck must have felt.
It was episode 11 of the best season of Chuck, season 2. I'm blissfully watching Chuck run through the barren land behind the Buy More. The music is intense. The lighting is dramatic. And suddenly I note one of my hairs on the computer screen. I sigh, and try to wipe it away. It doesn't move, but disappears when the camera changes shot. I move my handy scrollbar backwards (what we used to call "rewinding" in the VHW days) and watch again. There it is. A hair. And I yell, "Check the gate!"
Sure, in today's age we can go in and photoshop out the hair, but I like it being there. It's a reminder to me and anyone who enjoys photography that something seemingly innocuous can ruin a shoot.
Let this be a lesson to all you would-be photographers out there. Don't make my mistake... or the mistake of the guy on that episode of Chuck. Always. Always check the gate.

"Check the gate, watch yourself, check the gate, show me what you got"
"Check the gate is when it's a good take, and the director's happy with it so he says "check the gate", which means check it, and it's always a camera man who looks in and says "it's good." So I said, why don't we have a song for check the gate? And Skandar actually made up the song." - Georgie Henley.
