@speedydragondiplomatalienâ No ID needed for my little gal pal. Sheâs an eastern dobsonfly (Corydalus cornutus), sheâs quite small for what Iâve seen and very friendly as well! Havenât seen a male yet but I hope to very soon! Sending love bugs from the Midwest! đđđŚ
Sheâs beautiful! But sheâs not a dobsonfly, sheâs a fishfly in the genus Chauliodes. Female dobsonflies have larger mandibles than female fishflies do, and of course male dobsonflies have the biggest mandibles of all! Male fishflies are distinguishable by their large, feathery antennae.
Hereâs a female eastern dobsonfly for comparison! Note the large mandibles and the lack of yellow spots on the âshouldersâ like yours has :)

a big fish fly! family Corydalidae, probably Chauliodes sp. Sent a pic to my professor and he immediately asked me to send him some larvae in alcohol :')

fish flies are an insect that spends its childhood in water as little bitey creatures and then become huge and beautiful, like this male! theyre closely related to dobsonflies, a really buck wild insect also native to my area :>

I donât think I ever posted this here when I found it last summer, so here goes...
Found these eggs en masse on my moth sheet at the end of June 2019. No one recognized them at first, but eventually I hunted the id down on Bugguide - they were fishfly eggs! Fishflies (Chauliodes spp.) had a BANNER season in my yard, and I found several couples doing the hanky panky on and around the sheet. In a big fail, one female ended up laying her eggs on my sheet, nowhere near the water supply that her aquatic offspring would need drop down into in order to survive after they hatched. Sad, but still cool to have the opportunity to see the eggs up close.

Close up of a summer fishfly (Chauliodes pectinicornis) sitting on one of my porch lights last summer. I swapped out the bulb for a black light CFL a few years ago, and these guys are attracted to the UV wavelengths.
