August stilled at that, trying not to look...hopeful. Chase never initiated contact, never asked for it and he was terrified of ruining the moment, of scaring him off. “I’d never say no to you,” he answered softly, the weight of truth nearly tangible.

“Not a wise response,” he mused. He was hardly a person August should continually say yes to, but he knew it didn’t matter to the other. They were too far into this mess to turn anything back. He reached out, oddly gentle, placing both hands on August’s face and pulling him in for a kiss.

He couldn’t have heard that right. There was just absolutely no way. After all of the fights, all of the pain, the loss, he had to be losing what little sanity he had left. His head lifted, the chain still heavy around his neck, feline eyes aching to believe those words.

“Wh-what?”

He ran a hand through his hair, exhaustion sunk deep into his bones. He was sitting on the ground, just far enough to be outside of August’s range of motion, and he’d had a couple of drinks at this point. He wanted more, really, but one of them had to take care of kids in the morning.

The leopard didn’t struggle against his grip, he had long learned that it wasn’t the smartest thing to do. Of course, collaring Chase wasn’t exactly a bright idea either. “Payback,” he purred, laughter in his inhuman eyes.
