So, to pull it apart a bit:
1) They say it’s food for five days, not 10, but then go on to talk about 10 day lunch hampers- and it’s not just one photo going around either. I’m suspicious on this point.
2) The vouchers given to families have a value of £15, so what’s happened to the other £4.50? And why should packing and transport come out of that £15?
3) If it’s difficult to provide these hampers at short notice, why the fuck did you lobby government so hard in order to be able to do this? Surely this proves the vouchers are a better system for families?
4) This is meant to replicate the hot lunches kids get in school, but if you look at those sample quantities, the only hot meal you can really make is a baked potato (and not every day) or pasta and tinned tomatoes.
5) That’s a lot of fresh fruit and veg, which is healthy, sure, but it’s not exactly the most filling stuff for a hungry kid, and it does not a meal make.
6) Why aren’t poor kids/families allowed a choice about what they eat? What if they don’t like baked beans or tuna?
7) Some of this is unusable for families who live without proper cooking facilities.
8) The voucher scheme worked well. People were happy with it. There were no overheads. So why did it get changed? So private companies could make money at the expense of hungry kids.
