End of Shell 4.2
Well, shit. That sure wasnât the reaction Taylor was expecting, nor I for that matter. An innocent question about origin stories, and the Undersiders are acting like Taylor dropped a bombshell... eh? eh? nevermind.
Wildbowâs streak continues - I really liked this chapter. Lisa is always a hoot, even in serious discussions, and the way sheâs reaching out to Taylor, wanting to support her against the Harpies, and more generally trying to help her out of her shell is a very welcome development.
And the ending? This is how you do a cliffhanger. Iâm very much looking forward to the next chapter and seeing what the Undersiders will all be willing to say.
See ya then!
âThatâs fucking tragic.â
I shrugged. Â Iâd been resigned to being broomstick thin and flat as a board pretty much from the point Iâd started puberty. Â I just had to look at the genetics on either side of my family to know what I was in for.
Donât worry, Taylor: a) you can still look great like that, and b) even if you donât, looking great isnât actually as important as it might seem.
âAnd my condolences about your mom. Â I didnât know.â
...well now she does. Heh.
âAppreciated.â Â I sighed. âIâm vetoing the shirt.â
âFine, youâre allowed, but weâre keeping the jeans. Â They show off your figure.â
âThe figure of a thirteen year old boy,â I groused.
âYouâre taller than a thirteen year old boy, donât be silly.
Pfft.
Besides, whatever you look like, whatever your body type, thereâs bound to be someone out there who thinks youâre the hottest fucking person theyâve ever seen.â
See? Lisa knows whatâs up!
Apparently, I couldnât have picked a better way to kill the conversation.
...
okay then
I guess that isnât âkind of standardâ
That or all of them have less than happy feelings about their own origin stories.
A connection between traumatic events and gaining powers isnât unprecedented in the story. We have Taylor, after all. Although we (I) donât actually know if the winter event happened as a result of gaining the power, or vice versa, if thereâs causation at all. Correlation does not imply causation, and in this case we donât even know which way that causation would go.
Anyway, my point is, it wouldnât be all that surprising if traumatic events are one of the main causes of developing powers, or perhaps... unleashing them. Considering we know heredity can affect the likelihood of âdeveloping powersâ, itâs possible that even those without paraparents are born with their powers, but the powers lay latent until something (a particular stimulus, a trauma) causes them to activate.
Lisa turned away, for once without a smile on her face. Â Brian and Alec gave me strange looks, not saying anything.
âWhat?â I asked. Â I double checked there was nobody in earshot. Â âWhat did I say?â
This might actually be the best thing Taylor could say in this scenario. It clearly indicates that if she offended or hurt them somehow, it wasnât on purpose, and shows a willingness to learn.
*scrolls down*
Oh. Oh shit. Thatâs the end of the chapter.
âMore to the point, Iâm seeing you alternate between the same two pairs of jeans every day, when you got a paycheck for two grand five days ago. Â If I donât make you buy clothes, I donât think youâre going to.â
âMy dad will wonder where I got them,â I protested, as she folded a pair of blouses over one of my arms.
Taylor does raise a valid point there, but on the other hand, he knows she has friends now. âMy friend bought them for meâ would easily solve that particular excuse.
âYou borrowed them from me. Â Or they donât fit me anymore and I gave them to you. Â Or you can keep them at our place and leave him none the wiser.â
Those also work.
âI donât like lying to my dad.â
She ushered me into a curtained off area that served as a change room. Â Through the curtain, she told me, âI envy you that. Â But if he hasnât figured out the reason your wardrobe has shrunk so much, chances are heâs not going to notice if you have some new clothes.â
The reason... okay yeah, I think sheâs definitely talking about the Harpy hasslings now.
I was halfway through pulling off my shirt when that sunk in, âWhat are you talking about?â
âCome on, Taylor.  Iâd suspect you had some problems going on even without, you know⌠a little bird whispering in my ear.â
âItâs all over Twitter these days, Taylor.â

Cliffhangers donât work very well when I do these posts immediately after each other and you all know whatâs going to happen, do they.
âI know itâs kind of cliche, but when people with powers get together, isnât it kind of standard to share origin stories?â
Oooooh this could get interesting!
*chants* BACK-STO-RIES BACK-STO-RIES BACK-STO-RIES
Oh man, I just realized this is likely to include Taylorâs origin story too
Iâve been waiting for that since, what, 1.1?
She grinned, âThanks. Â Between them, I donât think those guys would ever let me live it down.â
âWould you let them, if the tables were turned?â
âHell naw,â she laughed.
âThatâs what I thought.â
I love these dorks. :p
âBut about our earlier conversation⌠last Iâll say on the subject tonight, promise.  If you ever decide you do want me to directly interfere in any of your personal stuff, just say the word.â
Thatâs fair. âI realize you donât want my help, but if you change your mind, Iâm here.â
Itâs a pretty similar situation to the one between Danny and Taylor, really.
I frowned, ready to be annoyed, but I relented. Â It was a fair offer, not pushing anything. Â âOkay. Â Thank you, but Iâm fine.â
âThen thatâs settled. Â Letâs go eat.â
F U G L Y Â B O BÂ â S
I swear my blood turned cold in my veins. Â I could just see her showing up at school, taunting Emma. Â I think the prospect of facing down Glory Girl again would spook me less.
Looks like Taylorâs leaning towards the latter.
I struggled to do up the top button of the jeans, which wasnât made any easier by my agitation.
No, Taylor, thatâs the wrong arc!
It took thirty seconds to get the button done up, and I swore under my breath the entire time. Â Where in the world had Lisa found jeans that were this tight on me? Â When I had them on, I opened the curtain and confronted her face to face.
The whole knowing things... thing was bullshit, this is Lisaâs real superpower:Â Finding tight jeans.
âHaving me try on clothes is fine,â I told her, doing my level best to keep my voice calm, âBut you interfere directly in my problems, and Iâm gone.â
âJust like that?â
âJust like that,â I said, âIâm sorry.â
Clear as day. Granted, itâs not clear whether they mean the same thing by âinterfere directlyâ.
She looked a little hurt, âFine.â Â Pouting a little, she waved a hand in the general direction of my clothes, âWhat do you think?â
I tried to adjust the collar. Â I liked the abstract design on the right side of the shirt, but the v-neck collar came to a point near where my ribcage ended and my stomach began. âTop is cut too low, jeans are too tight.â
Damn, thatâs a really deep cut. Better get Panacea on the case.
âYou need to get used to showing some cleavage. Â Like I said, be bold in your fashion choices.â
âIâd be fine with showing some cleavage if I had anything to show,â I pointed out.
Showing some cleavage! Iâm no expert on womenâs clothing, nor am I going to judge anyone who does like to dress like this, but a V-neck down to the bottom of her ribcage seems dangerously close to showing all of the cleavage. All of it.
That would certainly be bold, at least.
âYouâre a late bloomer?â she tried.
âMy mom was a B-cup, and not always then, depending on the brand of bra. Â And that was after she went up a partial size being pregnant with me.â
Fair enough. Canât all be humongous, even in a superhero setting.
