Jojolands 36: Two Kinds of Happy Pride
Now would you look what we have here. Jojolands takes a trip from the zoo into it's greatest strength, the sibling protagonists. You know I'm always up for this part of Part 9 and here as this enemy stand starts to taunt the rest of the group we go into two sides of the story of Dragona's first boyfriend.
I kinda like we're seeing D's not exactly perfect. The example here's a pretty solid one, had a good thing going with a seemingly nice, well-off guy. Stole from him to pay for a jawline treatment. Dude turned abusive when he found out. I think it says a lot that the way to play on Dragona's insecurities is to poke at where you felt you messed up a good thing going your way.
And then, the stand uses the same incident to poke at Jodio. The altercation with this Ex. You get a very interesting juxtaposition of my brother/that woman verbiage between them that maintains this interesting aspect of how they relate. More and more it feels like Jodio maintains a certain degree of willful ignorance about Dragona on that front. Which, to be clear, is a big part of why I like their dynamic. It's interesting, it's compelling, it's far from cliche.
Then...Jojolions. We can't have this series getting too introspective, time for some weird shit! It's not Jojo's Mundane Outing, after all. So we're gonna get these lions to bite off our Stand tags, but make them bite batteries so they explode!
The tonal whiplash in this single chapter really needs to be studied. We go from a very serious, very dramatic use of an enemy stand to reflect on our main cast...then almost like Jodio needs to shove these thoughts out of his brain we have him rush headlong into a batshit idea that also feels like the manga covering for getting too real by one-upping the absurdity. Respect.
