Really having thoughts about how Oda made the Mother flame as a clear analogy for Nuclear power/weapons and how Vegapunk's arc is meant to explore the ways scientific advancement can be harmful and helpful depending on application and how this is all coming from the perspective of a man who lives and writes from the only country in the world where a nuclear bomb was dropped during war time and how nuclear energy has the potential to be a revolutionary power source (especially in a world of advancing climate change catastrophe) in the form of fission of which Einstein (the clear basis for Vegapunk) had a large hand in making the US (the dropper of said bomb) aware of through his letter to the president where he also mentioned the potential of atomic energy to be used as a bomb.

Okay, holy fuck a lot happened this chapter. So I'm just going to go down a list of the things that stood out to me the most.
Joyboy being the first pirate. God of course he would be! It makes so much sense! Pirates in one piece are, for better or worse, depicted as the freest people. They form crews to their own specifications, they go where they want, do what they want, and and don't take orders from anyone. Of course Joyboy, this symbol of freedom would have been the first pirate. Would have been the first person to turn to the seas as a source of that freedom.
The mother flame being the result of Vegapunk's attempts to create free and sustainable energy. We have already gotten excellent commentary on the dangers of scientific advancement without any consideration for morality or ethics or who will primarily be using said discoveries throughout Egghead. The mother flame being an attempted energy source is just the cherry on top of it all. The reason why Vegapunk started working for the government - needing the funds to begin his research on projects like free energy - is also the reason why we have these incredibly dangerous weapons in the hands of the government. Even though his intentions were good, even though he wanted to help humanity, he ended up hurting them more. His scientific mind was used to create weapons, and all other creations were limited to Egghead - a government owned island. (Yes, some of them physically cannot work outside of Egghead, but not all of them.) His creations are used to police the one piece world through violence, used to wipe entire islands off the map. Hell, even when he finally did rebel against against the World Government by looking into the Void Century, the people of Egghead island ended getting caught in the crossfire, because he allied himself with the government to begin with. And the fact that he admits this! That he realized that his attempts at good were twisted because he was on government payroll, but he still stayed all those years because it was the only entity that could properly fund him. He was so caught up in his naive desire to create that he never thought about who he was actually creating for.
Also! The fact that we're finally getting info on Joyboy, and potentially a backstory for him?? I'm actually vibrating I cannot wait for the next chapter!!
Ooh! But the cover serial for 1114 tells us a lot! So Yamato's pilgrimage will be taking Yasu's sword to a shrine. A grand and noble quest indeed. Will have Yamato taking a tour of Wano which we have illustrated by yet another appearance of Kiku's map. There is something peculiar about this route, speaking of her. Ringo is a little spur after the deed is done...it doesn't need to be. Yams could just start his pilgrimage in Ringo. Ringo is significant for being your foil's home region on top of having Ryuma & Oden's shrine.
I'm a little curious about that. Not to mention of course who you'll come across as you set out. Most of our Akazaya buddies and the Kozuki clan should be in the Flower Capitol where we are now. Though of course we could see them scattered out and leading building projects. That Ringo spur being weird though feels like it might be a first sign of some more strangeness to come. Even if Egghead stretches out into WCI length that could be kicking Ringo out until after the arc's done. For now though, Yamato has his noble undertaking and I like the perky thumbs up.

Honestly? This chapter took a lot of time to show us the full range of worldwide reactions and while I respect it, doesn't offer much to say we haven't already. This is still a very cool element; the reaction is so scattered and that says a lot about the character of these different lands we traversed. Mock Town laughing their ass off with the cynical take is a favorite. But man was it fun seeing Hina, Margurite, Paulie, Boodle & Shushu was a hit. Always love that type of thing.
Predicting the earthquake for credibility was cool on Vegapunk's part. Very intriguing seeing a Celestial Dragon not knowing about the Void Century. Like, even as a basic concept. We've set this up with Doffy's backstory you know, some of them may be atrocious but it's the only life they've ever known and that makes them a victim of circumstance too.
Chapter was pretty light on the main cast actually. Given what we've seen so far it has me looking for anything that doesn't really add up but so far it's playing straight. Even if it's not a full-blown cutaway segment the broadcast for now is an excellent way to distract us and create another weird gap like last night or the food pile.
Vegapunk calling the earthquake too made me think of that. How it strikes worldwide but within that gap in time last night. Something that might have shaped things you know? And of course Robonosuke is still floating around. Which makes me wonder about Edison's plan here. Logic is sound, expand the cloud layer and you can drop right into the sea. Not to diminish his little guy energy pulling it off...but Egghead's done this so much I have my doubts it's that easy of an answer. You're still very vulnerable scooting across the cloud.
Heh, more York dashing around in the lab. Yeah...I chose that over the Mother Flame. No shame. I know what I'm about. The snailhunt is fun. The Gorosei are getting desperate and the more they do the more they run into that territory of desperation making someone's moves predictable. We start a notion here too with the narration that altogether makes me think about that possibility all these gaps hide some unknown interloper.
After all we've seen of Vegapunk, if this broadcast is taking over narration duties in the story I care so much about places he's talking about predictions and the limits of his own knowledge. We haven't seen it flip over into an unreliable narrator like Oden, or Kuma, or smaller examples just yet...but you're teetering on this. And that will change the whole tone of this segment.
This is why Toki is such a great card to have hanging around as a loose thread. Vegapunk so far seems like he really doesn't know much more than Robin would. Less I'd argue though there is a possibility he's picked up a stray Poneglyph or too. From the sounds of it he may have taught himself to read them which I can buy tbh. But his angle seems to be the start of the Void Century. Toki is interesting because she's born more towards the end of it. So capping off with something that made its way in through her is a great way to turn Vegapunk's message on its head.
