As sad as all that was, it's really nice to see Kuma, Bonney, Vegapunk, Kizaru, and Sentomaru sitting around and enjoying themselves.
Bonney and Kuma may only have this last bit of time together, but they're going to enjoy it.
And it also really adds to the stuff with Kizaru in the present.
This is genuinely just so tragic.
Not only is he giving up his free will, but he's never going to see his daughter healthy again.
All the time he'll have with his daughter is in the time she's undergoing treatment. He'll never be able to go outside with her again.
This feels like a punch in the gut.
Kuma was just told in order for him to cure Bonney, he has to lose all his free will, made to serve the government as an emotionless cyborg for the rest of his life.
And all he can do is cry from happiness, because his free will is such a small price to pay if it means saving Bonney.

Spoiler Chapter 1100
I'm finally catching up on One Piece and well, next time someone says "But Franky is just a Robot!" we can tell them...
"Removing the human will from a cyborg just turns it into a simple Robot."
So, Franky is not a robot, he has a human will and so is a cyborg.
We gotta talk Vegapunk for a sec. This is from 1100 and I wavered on pointing it out last week but the nice little beat from Stussy creeping in last week made me want to circle back. We have a break and are so far past linearity at this point. So...perfect example of his carelessness? Like, yeah you can make an argument he certainly didn't intend this. That's the point. We're comparing him to Oden, not a villain. Kizaru is just pointing out a simple fact. If you're gonna do sneaky stuff on the government payroll do the basic work to be clandestine. Maybe it's because I have plenty of experience working with legalistic types, but don't do it so blatantly everyone caught you. It's not dwelled on, but this is a huge example of the theme.
It's even set up right there with the impetus for dividing himself. This is such a great parallel with Luffy's Gear 5. The unlimited power and freedom of his awakening is so much he's lost control to some degree every time he uses it. There's this weird unsettling undertone to it you see now and then, not to mention draining him quick. It's a perfectly natural turn here, give you the ultimate power up and make the end about controlling it. Just like Yuyu Hakusho. Great thread to use around closing the story of some of these Supernova. They were always rivals. Law and Kidd met a grisly fate but Bonney? This arguably is more the denouement of her own story. She found Kuma and is grappling with the realitization it's too late. This was a pointless vengeance mission she went on to cope. It's weird right? Luffy's intruding on the end of Bonney's journey just like the two intruded on a big government shakeup.
This was a subtle shift but an important one, and one I imagine will leak over into at least the next leg of this journey. Kuma is doing something innocuous, but it's our old friend bending narrative structure again. This is just like how we treated Oden's logbook, same frames and all. Kuma here is taking over some of the duties of a narrator. And like Oden & Rakugo Rocky...he is not an entirely reliable one. He's trying to provide a sunny view of things for Bonney. It doesn't matter how innocuous it is, if you can tell a narrator is unreliable on first pass it is important to pay attention. Especially when it's a running theme.
There's also something sad and perfect for demonstrating how fine a line we're walking with Bonney and concepts we cared about with Kiku. Remember Cindry? The Okiku folk tale, the actress vibes, there was a point there especially when we see other seeds for Wano. But Kuma...we're seeing the history of a dead man. The important parts for present day are already known to the Straw Hats. The rather easy theory you see a lot that Kuma will show up and be rejoined with his old self? That would be the "miracle" that we didn't quite see with Cindry. But then again, you can never go back and isn't it cool how a certain Miracle Man straddles both stories too?
