And Yamato just changed their mind and we didn't even see it? All they wanted was to be free of the island that they were held captive at for 28 years! It was their literal DREAM to leave Wano and sail with Luffy...and now they want to stay and ✨explore✨

I’ve thrown down a big marker on this blog and stuck by it, an interpretation of the arc looking at Kiku as a prospective Quartermaster. Focusing on subtlety and the foil dynamic with the flashy but flawed candidate in Yamato. I always felt a valid route for this is a bit of a “hidden in plain sight” twist.

Quietly slipping on and unpacking the subtleties “after the curtain” was one way I saw this going from the jump. The actress finally being willing to break character as she sails away. 1059 after all should line up close to this year’s Chrysanthemum Festival. So...1057 gave me something intriguing to top off a strange run of chapters for Miss Chrysanthemum. 

...there are not enough words in the English language to express my utter disappointment at this. What the fuck. What the actual fuck.

From the get go, presenting Yamato as a friend of Ace’s who had been promised to go to sea with Ace next time, it felt like he was going to end up joining the Strawhats in some poetic “Luffy fulfilling Ace’s promise” plot.

And then, after the final battle, we just had them flat out say it. Both, Luffy offering Yamato to come with him, as well as Yamato declaring that he’d come with them. I did not get my hopes up on delusions, Oda put it explicitly into the damn text, I had every right to expect for Yamato to leave with the Strawhats.

And now, out of abso-fucking-lutely nowhere this. I’m so mad and disappointed right now.
