The TodoFam in BNHA Vol. 6 - The Todorokis in street clothes
Everyone is familiar with the Todorokis Hero and Villain clothes. What people might have missed though are the ordinary clothes the Todoroki wears so if they do wear ordinary clothes in a volume, I will collect the images for everyone to see.
We have four images of three Todorokis in street clothes in this volume, the Todorokis in question being Shōto, Rei and Fuyumi.
For Shōto one image is in the character page while the other is in the cover for chap 52.
For Rei in chap 53 we have glimpses of her in her pajamas.

Fujitani Byōin (藤谷病院 “Fujitani hospital”) from Chap. 53 and Ep. 29
Fujitani hospital is the place where Rei is recovered and spends 10 years of her life.
As it is a relevant place in the Todoroki family story I will collect the images depicting it. As usual manga and anime can't really agree on how it should be, and even retcon its look along the story.
I think it is still interesting to have a chance to give a look to it and, since I'm a it, I'll compare how the two versions show the place.
There is just a scene showing the hospital, basically a manga panel and it is worth to mention that this panel is basically the exact same image we saw in chap 44 (which the colored version decided to greenscale to give the impression it is a flashback)...
...while in the anime they redrew the scene so now we have a new visual of Rei’s room... and in it we might notice a difference if we compare it to Ep. 25 as now the desk is no more visible because the anime not only feels the need to change things from the manga but also fromt he anime itself.

Honō no SIDEKICKERS (炎のサイドキッカーズ “Flaming Sidekickers”) from Chap. 53
The Flaming Sidekickers are the more than 30 sidekicks that work for Endeavor in Endeavor agency.
While they are introduced pretty early on, they will have to wait quite a long time to be named, and we will be introduced only to 3 of them.
In the early parts of the story we see glimpses of them but there do not seem to be an intention to develop them... until they get some attention in the Endeavor Agency arc.
Due to this I decided it could be interesting to look at the moments in which the Flaming Sidekickers appear in the manga.
Observation notes:
Chap 53 shows some of them in a panel, though most of them are just silouettes and only two are seen clearly.
These two are the prototype version for Onimā... and for Kidō. Yeah, his design was very different but we will see in the future chapters that he will evolve into Kidō. It is a pity that Onimā and Kidō are in a way old characters and yet they hardly got developed. We do not know their true names and, for Onimā, we do not even know his Quirk.

Todoroki Shotō “Why? That's what I should be asking you. I thought about the "meaning" for a few seconds. Because they sent only location information in a mass message. They're not the type of person to do that without a reason, so you must be saying, "I'm in trouble, call for backup." It'll be alright! The Pros will be there in a few minutes! Just as the information said. I won't let you kill these guys, Hero killer!”
Midoriya Izuku ‘Todoroki-kun, soitsu ni chiI misecha dameda! Tabun chi no keikō sesshu de aite no jiyū o ubau! Minna yarareta!’

She told me that my moving forward without being bound by anything would be her happiness and salvation. If I were still the same person I used to be, I would never have chosen my father's office for my work experience. I haven't forgiven him, and I have no intention of forgiving him. 轟焦凍「なりてえもんちゃんと見ろ!!」
Todoroki Shotō “Look carefully at what you want to become!!”
Observation notes:
We start the chapter with Shotō fighting Stain using both his fire and ice against him without hesitations or problems of any sort, a battle Horikoshi uses to remark what a strong foe Stain is since Shotō, who is impressively strong and has overcame his problems with using his fire, is also having problems against him... and the good part of the battle do not lie in how strong Stain’s Quirk is so that it allows him to keep up with Shotō, no, Stain can’t get to use his Quirk against him but he shows, through using his experience and his intelligence, he can pose a genuine threat EVEN WITHOUT USING HIS QUIRK. Shotō, despite using at full power his powerful dual Quirk, can’t hit him, while Stain manages to wound Shotō without using his Quirk. Sure, Stain has experience on his own side, but this is another example of how people do not necessarily need a Quirk (or a body armor) to fight a foe.
As the fight goes on Īda remarks how he should be the one fighting Stain because he inherited Ingenium’s name. Shotō counters he is not acting like Ingenium because Ingenium never makes that kind of (murderous) face and seems to think there are problems at Īda’s home too, same as his own.
I will foreshadow that sadly Īda’s home is a perfectly ordinary home with no dark side... which is bad because Stain was making a valid point regarding how Heroes are not being Heroes anymore but if Ingenium and Native are just two very well meaning Heroes whose only fault is they get to be famous and are paid for their work, Stain’s point loses a lot of his strength and make him look like a stupid because he went and attacked two people worthy of the title of Heroes (All Might too get paid and he his filthy rich and overly popular so it would not be fair to hold accountable the others for getting paid and being popular) when he could have gone after the Heroes who were committing crimes and that would have been Lady Nagant’s targets had she been free.
I mean... which was the point of telling us that in the cities in which Stain appeared had more Hero awareness and a drop in crime if the ones Stain targets are the good Heroes? Why going back on claiming THERE ARE bad Heroes if this is not capitalized when we have someone who wants to target them?
Why destroying Stain’s argument not by showing killing/hurting is not the solution, but merely by showing that Stain is incompetent when he has to correctly choose his targets?
This makes me think that the story AGREES in culling out Heroes, but only as long as the Heroes culled out are incompetent!
Whatever, we have what we have but it is still a pity Shotō and Co will not get to prove that Stain’s argument is wrong.
Anyway, Midoriya recovers from the effects of Stain’s Quirk and join Shotō in fighting him. Since Shotō is seriously hurt Midoriya volunteer to be the one at the attack while Shotō provides cover.
We then get a long inner monologue from Shotō who compares how Īda feels to what he was feeling in the past, admitting he was worried for him, which shows not only Shotō’s power of observation (as not everyone noticed) and inner kindness (as not only not everyone worried but at the time Shotō and Īda were not close). His thoughts then jumps to when he met his mother and here, IN AN EXTREMELY TINY FLASHBACK, we are told how their meeting which seemed so important in chap 44, went.
Rei cried, apologized and forgave Shotō then told him if he were to continue to live his life this would be salvation for her. Well, gold star to her for being the best mom but this is a convenient way for Horikoshi not to dig in future chapters into something he built up in chap 44, Shotō’s wish to save his mother, but let him continue to live his life.
In fact, through the story, we will not see another meeting between Rei and Shotō until Rei will leave the hospital... because Horikoshi did not care to show how Shotō saved her.
At the same time we get another extremely short flashback about how and why Shotō ended up having his work study at Endeavor agency and while said flashback remarks Shotō did not forgive Enji kind of put an end to the feud between the two by having Shotō being the one who decided to be there to learn from Enji... which was exactly what Enji wanted.
Basically, in this arc and especially in this chapter Horikoshi tries to close Shotō’s drama by showing how he can now use his fire, how he has made peace with his mother and how... he did not quite make peace with his father but now he is willing to work with him. Everything was probably all meant to end here, but then Horikoshi probably decided it would make things more interesting if everything wasn’t solved so fast so future chapters will reveal that no, everything is not solved.
The chapter ends with Shotō telling Īda he shouldn’t forget who he wants to be (because Shotō had a time in which he forgot it and Īda, in his quest for revenge, is forgetting this as well).
All this would have been good experience for him that should have helped him to interact/reach Tōya during their fight but no, Shōto won’t manage to tell him a single thing that will affect him during their battle and this experience is not referenced during it either as if Horikoshi completely forgot it, if not for the Īda part about the kind of Hero Īda wants to become. Pity.
On a sidenote... Stain will show to be very impressed by Midoriya, in whom he could see All Might because he came to save Īda but he did not express the same admiration for Shōto who came to save both Īda and Midoriya. Guess Shōto is not main character enough in Stain/Horikoshi’s books... again, this is a pity.
Cultural notes:
Katakiuchi (敵討ち “revenge”): a legally sanctioned form of revenge in feudal Japan, particularly during the Edo period (1603-1867), where family members could officially avenge the murder of a close relative or lord. It was rooted in Confucian duty, requiring a permit from authorities to kill the murderer, with strict limitations on who could act and against whom, and was legally abolished by 1880. The right to take revenge was usually restricted to close relatives (parents, elder brothers) or a lord. Samurai believed in the Confucianist teaching that one "must not live under the same heaven as their enemy", where enemy can also refer to an enemy of their family or of their lord, making revenge a necessary act to restore family honor. The concept of taking personal revenge was a well-regulated and culturally accepted duty designed to conclude the conflict initiated by the original murder. While, of course, by the time BNHA takes place this sort of revenge has stopped being allowed, the idea of taking revenge was harder to die and, especially in manga and anime, is still taken to the extreme (aka killing your enemy). In case someone missed it, Īda’s brother after his incident had told him to inherit his name but, at first, Īda refused to do so, not seeing himself worthy but now that he is pursuing revenges he views himself as the one who inherited Ingenium’s name because he is going to restore family honor by killing Stain. This makes his situation similar to Shotō’s in the sense he was expected to fulfill his father’s ambitions by surpassing All Might, an idea still rooted in Confucian duty, though this time it do not involve killing Enji’s enemy/rival. Both Īda’s and Shotō’s families therefore come out as Japanese families anchored to traditional values.
Retcon notes:
Not quite a retcon, but this is also a good moment to point out that the moment knives hit Shotō’s arm his fire gets snuffed out because through all the manga the fire of a fire Quirk user generally get easily snuffled out when he is hurt with only a notable scene through all the manga, Toya burning himself on Sekoto Peak. And before you will tell me he didn’t know how to snuff it out, the manga showed at three of age he knew exactly how to snuff it out when it hurt.
As mentioned early on, in this chapter Shotō uses his fire and his ice at the same time for the first time and he does it just fine IN A BATTLE AGAINST A VERY DANGEROUS FOE. Later on though Horikoshi will introduce the idea he has troubles coordinating the two.
Translation notes:
Stain, to define the ones who come to help Ingenium, calls them ‘yūjin’ (友人) which means “friend/companion” which is a formal term, representing someone you know well but is distinct from a family member and which is considered more polite and professional than ‘tomodachi’ (友達), often used to describe close friends in a formal context.
To call Īda’s family Shōto uses ‘Omaen chi’ (おまえん家). Just ‘Omae’ (おまえ) would mean “you” or, in this case, “your” as for the kanji meaning “family” in this instance it is read ‘chi’ (ち) and it’s generally a more informal reading as it seems to refer a family or a house of a speakers friend and it’s usually preceded by an ‘n’ (ん) sound, which is often included as the whole thing becomes a contraction of ‘no uchi’ (のうち) → ‘nchi’ (んち). ‘Uchi’ is another reading for teh same kanji and this reading can be used to refer to the physical building, but it’s more with an “home” value, as it’s usually a building/location a person grew up in, or a place they think they belong to. By extension it can also be used to refer to one’s family… or even to all people within one’s inner circle of closest friends and confidantes.
Episode 29 - Hero Killer Stain vs. U.A. Students (ヒーロー殺しステインVS英雄生徒 HERO-goroshi STAIN VS U.A. Seito)
Added parts notes:
The anime adds a quote to Shotō’s inner monologue, more specifically to the part in which he talks about his mother. While in the manga all he says about here is:
Todoroki Shotō ‘(Haha wa naite ayamari, odoroku hodo assari to waratte yurushite kureta. Ore ga nani ni mo torawarezu ni tsuki susumu koto ga shiawase deari sukui ni naru to itte kureta.’
轟焦凍「(母は泣いて謝り、驚く程あっさりと笑って赦してくれた。俺が何にも捉われずにつき進む事が幸せであり救いになると言ってくれた。)」
Todoroki Shotō “(My mother cried and apologized, and to my surprise, she laughed and forgave me without hesitation. She told me that my moving forward without being bound by anything would be her happiness and salvation.)”
In the anime he first says he explained her everything that happened to him during the time they didn’t see each other.
Todoroki Shotō ‘(Ano hi, ima made no koto, jibun no ima no koto o zenbu hanashita. Haha wa naite ayamari, odoroku hodo assari to waratte yurushite kureta. Ore ga nani ni mo torawarezu ni tsuki susumu koto ga shiawase deari sukui ni naru to itte kureta.)’
轟焦凍「(あの日、今までの事、自分の今の事を全部話した。母は泣いて謝り、驚く程あっさりと笑って赦してくれた。俺が何にも捉われずにつき進む事が幸せであり救いになると言ってくれた。)」
Todoroki Shotō “(That day, I told her everything that had happened up until then, and everything about my current situation. My mother cried and apologized, and to my surprise, she laughed and forgave me without hesitation. She told me that my moving forward without being bound by anything would be her happiness and salvation.)”
Changed parts notes:
The anime redrew the scene in which Rei turns toward Shotō and... it is a mess because instead than surprised she is smiling. Even if we want to assume it is a late scene... well this would mean she did not look at him while he spoke so that is not great.
The anime also recycles the scene of Shotō being in Enji’s office we saw in a previous episode instead than showing us just Enji like the manga does.
The scene in which Enji says they will go to Hosu is also pretty different from the manga. In the manga Shotō saw his father in some big room, telling his sidekicks they would go in Hosu, Enji distant from Shotō, while in the anime Enji tells Shotō they will go to Hosu while they are together in Enji’s office, and then Enji informs his sidekicks about this while standing on the door of his office.
Todoroki Shotō ‘Doko E ? Nani Shi ?’
轟焦凍「どこへ?何し?」
Todoroki Shotō “Where? To do what?”
Todoroki Enji ‘Zenrei-dōrinara Hosu ni futatabi HERO-goroshi ga arawareru! Shibashi Hosu ni shutchō shi katsudō suru! ! Sugo Hosu shi ni renraku shirō!!’
轟炎司「前例通りなら保須に再びヒーロー殺しが現れる!しばし保須に出張し活動する!!市に連絡しろぉ!!すぐ保須市に連絡しろぉ!!」
Todoroki Enji “I’ll be on a temporary assignment in Hosu! Contact the city! If precedents hold true, the hero killer will reappear in Hosu! Contact Hosu City immediately!”
Honō no SIDEKICKERS ‘Hai!’
炎のサイドキッカーズ「はい!」
Flaming Sidekickers “Yes!”
Deleted parts notes:
Since, as said in the previous part, they decided to have Shotō only use his fire for his first attack against Stain, there is no ice around him.
Extra notes:
The scene of Shōto freezing and unfreezing the place was included in the scenes that took part to the ultimate scene ranking.
