omg QUIZILLA.

what i remember from quizilla is that i spent like 2 straight years reading and writing fics on it. and the fics i read were like ... “WHAT?! YOUR SENDING ME TO MILITARY SCHOOL?!” and “I'm a Girl...in an ALL BOY'S BOARDING SCHOOL?!?!” and “Malfoy's TWIN is in GRYIFFINDOR house?” and “I HATE you Draco Malfoy!...I Think (Ladies Only)” (these are honest to god titles that i have just rediscovered thanks to googling, and no, i don’t know what “ladies only” means). also i read so many band fics back then, all my chemical romance and good charlotte where it was basically the entire band falling in love with the self-insert mary sue.

not to mention the inordinate number of fics about the american transfer student showing up to hogwarts randomly in the middle of the series. to be honest, i actually do remember reading a solid series that followed that premise? i don’t remember much about it; other than the main character was an american transfer student and the author used alexis bledel as a face claim for all the chapter artwork. i ALSO remember that it was one of those interesting cases where you could actually witness the author improving as they wrote, where the beginning of the series was mediocre at best and then near the end their writing was genuinely impressive.  

ALSO!! the really popular fics had graphics at the start of it? which were always terribly thrown together google images just like, slapped on a square with some font added on top. (google is your friend you want to skip down memory lane).

oh god. thanks to googling i was just reminded that most of quizilla fics back in 2004ish were written in second person perspective. AKA everything was written like: “you sat down next to pansy and tried not to look at draco from across the table. you could feel his glare stuck on you.”  

not to mention everything back then was in quiz format. at some point i think they finally started letting people post stories and poems and what not. but back when i read it they only allowed quizzes. so people would enter pages of text as the questions and then the answers would be...whatever the author wanted? sometimes they just used it as a line break, but other times they gave multiple responses that were all just self-insert nonsense. it was completely ridiculous and i loved every minute of it.

I just did it this morning, and it... well, definitely put the “screen” in “phone screen.” Those 30 practice interview questions I wrote out, answered, and rehearsed miiiight have been overkill for a short conversation going over my resume but :p 

7. What’s your dream job?

At this point I want to consult for the government of a country or an NGO on how to do archaeology, conservation, and presentation of information on sites that have experienced a genocide or other violent conflict.

23. Theoretical or practical?

A mix of both. I don’t think going to either extreme is the best choice.

45. Do you ever regret going to university?

Nope! Archaeology is a field that requires higher education. I also grew up in a family where the kids are expected to go to college, so that was always my plan.
