so, you might completely hate this, but what do you think of martha x heather chandler as a romantic ship? ive never seen it written or actively talked about, and it just seems a little interesting to me. i think that there would definitely need to be a lot of thought that went into an attempt at writing that or it even existing in someone’s brain, but i can’t help and wonder if other people can slightly see it as well. i almost feel like if under the right circumstances, martha would be able to soften heather, and that heather might be a good person to toughen martha up. i feel as though a good friends —> lovers trope could work; but i just wanted to know how you view them, and if you have ever thought of them in a romantic sense!
I mean it's canon, right? At least one-sided. Chandler says she's in love with Martha in the musical. :P
I have thought about them as a relationship, mainly because of that throwaway line in the Martha POV Further Complications. My initial thought was that it would run into the same issues I have with Chandlmara. I can imagine it happening, but I can't picture it working long-term because I think Chandler needs someone who challenges her, and I think both McNamara and Martha are likely to get steamrolled in a relationship with Chandler.
But with some character development, it could work, I think. And I have an easier time seeing that specific character development happen with Martha than with Mac. Martha does have some guts, after all. She was ready to go confront JD despite thinking that he was a murderer before Veronica stopped her. She's just also got a lifetime of being told by everyone to make herself smaller, less obtrusive, less visible, that she needs to work through.
I read this last night while dealing with baby crises, and it's been kicking around in my head since, and I think where my thoughts really go is to, like, a She's All That type scenario. Chandler gets involved in a bet that she can make Martha popular. (In the version in my head, the bet is with Duke, because Duke used to be friends with Martha. Chandler makes some disparaging comment about how she could have picked Martha instead of Duke and then Duke would be the loser, and this triggers the bet, but this is not relevant to the ship.) She helps Martha pick out more flattering clothes, learn makeup, and most importantly learn some confidence.
And as Martha becomes more confident, and gets comfortable with Chandler, less scared of her, she starts being more playful with her, as well as pressuring her to be nicer, and defending some of her geeky interests that Chandler tries to rid her of. She finds a balance between the sweet little nerd she is and the popular kid that Chandler is trying to sculpt her into, and Chandler finds that she really likes that version of Martha.
And then, because it's a She's All That, presumably Duke blows the whole thing up and we're in angst city, baybeeee!
