Some thoughts on noodles and happiness
While we were walking through the cave, there were two gates, one for long life and the other for happiness. Without any hesitation we all walked through the happiness gate, but surprisingly the Chinese group behind us chose the long life gate. This was a bit unexpected; whats the point of living a long life if you are not happy?
A lot of Buddhism practices and beliefs focus on having a healthy life through meditation and spiritual practice which is often linked to vitality and longevity. We were told by our Chinese friends that religion is not practiced in China, yet everything they do and everywhere we go we can see religious philosophy’s influence, from walls, bracelets, animals, burping (it brings good luck!) and even noodles!
I just found out there’s a Chinese belief that if you eat noodles on someone’s birthday or at new year it brings you a long life. The saying goes, “Noodles for long life!” and the explanation behind the belief is that ‘you are what you eat’. So if you eat long noodles you are going to have a long life.
I am glad it’s only for birthdays and new year, or God knows how long I will live based on the amount of noodles I had every day in China!
For those who want to live a long life but struggle with eating noodles, this might help :)
