This was strange as well; gone were the concrete streets and high buildings, replaced by what seemed to be a never-ending stretch of fields and an unyielding amount of scarecrows.
They were all directed at them, like they were waiting for them to make the first move.

The Poet's eye scans the paper, fiercely biting his tongue. He doesn't want to answer this. He doesn't want anyone to know his real name. That man is dead. Long gone. Thereโs no use in calling after him and trying to find pieces buried six feet deep.
Still, he can feel the name rising in his chest like bile in his throat. He clenches hold of the handle on his cane until his knuckles go white. Resist. Don't answer. RESIST.

Zane walked the rainy streets like he had nothing to worry about in the dark. He weaved his way around the shadows that barely turned to look his way. Zane was smart enough to keep his distance, knowing that at any moment one of them could find him interesting enough to follow. Tonight, he was getting lucky, and pushed that luck by ducking down an alleyway and away from the relative safety cast by distant neon lights. It was a mistake, because of course it was. Something had gotten the shadows riled and they circled, pacing like caged tigers back and forth in the litter strewn alleyway. They noticed Zane's entrance into a scene he wasn't meant to be a part of and a whisper of "The Poet" spread through them like a wave, echoing and weaving around each other. He hadn't been their quarry, but he might be now and it took a moment in Zane's confusion to find what had disturbed them from their intended paths. They would have blended in with the other dark shapes if they weren't noticeably smaller. And if it wasn't for the sword. The strangeness of the scene had Zane shoving the danger to the side in favor of whatever this new angle was. "You might have more luck with a gun," He said, head cocked slightly like a dog who had heard an interesting sound. "They're quick!" He was reaching for his own (stolen) when that figure was on him, dragging him back towards the wall farthest from the pacing shadows. He assumed, they saw him as a new threat and was about to voice a warning -- and press that stolen gun to their side -- when the stranger brought a finger to his lips to stop Zane before he could even start. Reflexively, Zane snapped his teeth like a startled animal and shot blindly at the encroaching shadows.

Something was tickling at the back of the waitressโ mind while she plated the pie (she had started to get it ready before the confirmation because basically everybody said yes to pie). The coffee order heightened that feeling, some kind of recognition crossing over her thoughts like a shadow stretching out of a darkened corner.
Rose hummed faintly, head tilted like she was listening for something distant. Faint repetition, crashing over and over somewhere outside the door and far above her head in the darkโฆ
โOh! Sorry! Tooth-rotting, got it!โ Rose said, snapping out of her daze with a bright smile and a thumbs up. Lost in her thoughts again. Silly of her with a customer waiting, and she couldnโt even remember what exactly she had been thinking about. It must not have mattered, she decided as she poured a mug of coffee and added way too much sugar. It would probably be kind of gritty like that, but the customer was always right. Rose delivered the mug and the pie to the customerโs table, along with a fistful of sugar packets for good measure. Just in case she hadnโt managed to make an instant cavity concoction after all. โReally coming down out there, huh?โ Rose asked sympathetically, noting the soaked hoodie. That weird feeling came back Roseโs head and turned into something a little less threatening when she realized it was because she did now this person. Not a newcomer at all! She felt a little guilty for even thinking that. โYouโre that musician, right? Iโve seen your posters! But I havenโt been able to make it to a showโฆ Work. You know how it is,โ Rose said with a shrug and a smile.
