The Handmaiden (2016): A teenage girl of low-birth becomes the handmaiden of a wealthy heiress in this twisting story of deception set in 1930′s Japan. Love complicates a scheme to steal the inheritance, and wavering loyalties are exposed through interweaving pieces of the plot.
First Impressions: The way this movie unfolds is reminiscent of film noir, but tighter and with more command of structure. Chan-Wook carefully plants seeds indicating the true relationships at play, later showing us scenes from different perspectives and putting a twist on what we’ve seen up until that point. Not that the comparison to noir is the most tenable connection, but it is worth mentioning the similarities to the conspiratorial spirit of the femme fatale from films like Double Indemnity.
This is a beautifully shot movie with careful attention paid to framing, composition, and blocking. The camera movement is efficient, expressive, and to me, demonstrates Chan-Wook to be approaching the level of auteur if he isn’t there already. Set design and the interior of the estate are amazing. Despite the time period and foreign setting, this film still feels timeless. Lastly, it must be mentioned that the sometimes gratuitous sex scenes feel out of place and overly long, but do make this film stand out as unique(?) It seems like an odd choice, but one that perhaps helps reveal the character dynamics as they change.
