Challenge 006: Ghosts of Christmas' Past.
How do you/your family generally celebrate Christmas (if at all)?
These days I sit on the couch with a beer and watch bad TV all day/all night. I might get up to make mac & cheese maybe.
Favorite Christmas Carol?
Auld Lang Syne, if that can be counted IDK. My Gran used to sing it to me around this time of year. Lot of memories there.
Describe your most memorable past Christmas.
Memorable in a bad way. I was 10 and Leanne had some new boyfriend and had fucked off to live with him and so it was our first Christmas without her, Gran had gotten everything ready, like this freaking incredible Christmas dinner and I'd been given this really nice chess set and a few other things and everything was fine, and then halfway through dinner the cops showed up to tell us Leanne had been in a car accident, her boyfriend had been drunk driving but apparently they'd been fighting too, cause there were skid marks all over the road and everything and basically she was in pretty much critical condition and so we spent the rest of Christmas in the hospital waiting to see if she was okay, it was actually really scary but I just felt so bad for my Grandparents cause they'd gone to so much effort and she'd fucked everything up again. I don't know, it's fucked.
What are the best and worst presents you’ve ever received (and from whom)?
The best present I ever got was a bike from my grandparents, they bought it brand new and it was the most expensive thing I'd ever owned. I still have it and use it regularly, though it's a lot more worn than it was 10 years ago. It was just really special to me cause it meant they trusted me and my Pa taught me how to ride it and I don't know there was just this sudden sense of freedom that came with it. I liked that. I like that.
The worst present I've ever received was this stuffed scarecrow doll that my Pa's sister gave to me when I was about five, it looked like it was fucking possessed but I had to keep it cause Pa said so, it sat on a shelf in my room for like 3 years and I had nightmares about it consistently. It was the fucking worst. I'm pretty sure I burnt it when I was like 13.
Did you ever believe in Santa? When did you find out the truth?
I did believe in Santa. Very much so. I would actually trip myself into genuinely thinking I'd heard sleigh bells on the roof or that I'd seen him walk down the hallway. I really, really thought he was real. I guess I just really wanted to believe he was as well. Leanne shattered that vision though when I was about nine, I was being a bit of a brat one night and she just…yeah. I didn't believe her at first but then cause she'd put the idea in my head, I became suspicious and then worked it out from there, which really sucked.
Write a short para of Christmas Day 2013.
