The chakram project has moved to the paint and finishing stage. After the primer paint the first color sprayed on was the silver. No masking was done at this point, I figured to apply the paint in layers from lightest to darkest. In theory that was logical but in practice I found that the red paint peeled too easily away from the silver. In the future I will mask out each color and apply each color directly to the primer.
Since the red wanted to peel so easily, I used an Exacto knife at all of the masked edges to cut the paint during the unmasking process. This kept the red from peeling and made the color edges look sharp. Where there were problems I touched up the paint with the original spray paint hand applied by brush. This made the touch up areas stand out somewhat, but I did not want to do additional masking at this point!
The painted chakrams were given two coats of satin clear. The clear coating helped to seal the color paint edges and keep any weak areas from peeling up. They probably weight at least one pound each when finished. My daughter liked them but says we have to respray them in gloss clear so they will be more shiny!
I’ve made the STL files for 3D printing these chakrams available at my Etsy store for $12, here is the link: https://www.etsy.com/shop/coolmodelguy
