L O P A K K O A classic Malaysian hawker favourite, now on the menu of Mamak Takapuna. The dish is a showcase for cubed radish (loh pak) cake, steamed then cooked on a hot plate/wok. In Malaysian hawker stalls, the Loh Pak Ko is cooked on the hot plate and you can hear the radish cake being “chopped” up. The LPK is stir-fried with dark soy sauce, bean sprouts and egg + chai poh (preserved radish) which gives this dish its distinctive taste and crunch. Char Kueh Kak Fried Steamed Rice Cake. A popular hawker breakfast food, originating in Pinang. Cooked at Selera, Newmarket. Normally would not even bother to post but I'm getting annoyed at eating badly cooked Malaysian and Chinese food. Usually vegetarian (sometimes shrimp added on request). The Char Kueh is chopped up in a hot plate and fried to smoky (wok hei), garlic, chives, bean sprouts and chai poh. Drizzled with soya sauce. An egg is broken over this mix. So why is this Char Kueh Kak soggy and tastes like the wok it was cooked in wasn't washed from the previous prawn dish? There was no chai poh. The dish basically tasted of prawn infused soya sauce and salty to boot.
