Hi, earlier this week I adopted long time stray dog from the shelter. At the vet's office the heartworm test came back positive but when they looked at his blood sample they didn't see any microfilaria. I'm curious what this means/the reason is. But at the time didn't have the braincells to ask my vet.
Aside from the heartworm positive he's in good health. I will be getting him treatment when he's had a chance to calm down and settle in a bit more.

A reason that I can think of immediately is the adult(s) in the heart may be only one sex of individual(s). Others are immune responses and/or preventative medication have destroyed the baby worms, but not the adults.
