#1094 - Chaetodermis penicilligerus - Prickly Leatherjacket
AKA Tasselled Filefish, Leafy Leatherjacket, Weedy File-fish, and similar variations.
Photos and ID by @gemfyre. The top photo was taken at the breakwater near the Omeo wreck, in very shallow water. It was fascinating to watch how the leatherjacket, swimming along tilted on its side to watch me, would change colour as she crossed from bare sand to seaweed and back again.
Found in coastal waters throughout the tropical waters of the Indian Ocean, (Red Sea, Persian Gulf and South Africa excluded), and east to the central islands of the Pacific Ocean. Omnivorous, but the mouth is too small for large prey.
Quite good eating, too.
Tasselled Leather-jacket
Also known as Prickly Leather-jacket, the Tasselled Leather-jacket, belongs to the species Chaetodermis penicilligera (Tetraodontiformes - Monacanthidae), recognized by its compressed body which has a variable cover of dermal flaps, its large caudal fin, and its strong first dorsal fin spine.
The Tasselled Leather-jacket occurs in coastal marine waters of the Indo-West Pacific.
