There's something so painfully childlike about Sabo and Ace arguing about killing Luffy. They're trying so hard to be big, bad grownups, but at the end of the day they're all just kids

I just want to mention that in this little flashback section alone it is seen and/or mentioned that Luffy nearly gets eaten by alligators, tigers, wolves, buzzards, piranhas, and giant poisonous snakes just in the walk between Mt Corvo and Gray Terminal. That's like Grand Line levels of lethal animal concentration, to say nothing of the giant sea monsters shown at the end of chapter one swimming around the coast.
For an East Blue location, Dawn Island is hardcore.
While Luffy may have initially been inspired by how Shanks dealt with the mountain bandits, we learn later in the flashback that Luffy is most driven by a fear of being alone.
Garp has taken Luffy away from everyone he knows and cares for, and the people who knew and cared for him in return. He understandably distrusts and doesn't like the mountain bandits, who in turn see him as a burden to be endured. In those circumstances, what choice does he have but to risk being eaten by a tiger and latch himself onto the only other person around in hopes of making a friend?
This exchange is mostly a gag, but the focus on the bowl and cup feels intentional given how important the sake sharing session will be later in the flashback. Dadan is (initially) very stingy with her resources and resists caring for Ace and Luffy, whereas the boys chose to become family through the sharing of a drink.
I've mentioned it before, but sharing food is a big part of the friendship/family making process in One Piece, and is one of the reasons why big arcs end with a party and a feast.

I have many opinions about Sabo, but one of my most strongly held convcitions is that Oda did him dirty by switching his lil' potato nose to a more conventionally handsome design when he shows up as an adult
Damn, you know the economy's in the shitter when even the bandits are in a recession
I'd forgotten about this little insert to Shanks. Luffy meeting Ace would have happened very quickly after learning this lesson, so it makes a lot of sense just how much Luffy takes it to heart.
It is a little crazy that Ace is able to knock down this giant tree by kicking it. Low-key one of his more impressive feats of strength in the series
