I’ve given a lot of thought to the seemingly warring nature between the great destiny that seems fated for the main characters and the freedom that they struggle to attain...but I don’t think they necessarily have to be opposing ideas, and the idea of Inherited Will is what links them together.
Luffy’s been set up as Roger’s successor for a long time, the “one he was waiting for”. But it’s not some nebulous fate that picked Luffy at random. He inherited something that had been passed down over time. And he inherited it of his own free will. As Otohime explains during the Fishman Island chapters, people choose to pick up or reject the ideals and worldviews of the generations who came before
The rest of Mock Town fades away because they don’t matter. They have chosen not to believe, decided to discard the dreams of those who came before them in favor of what they can see with their own two eyes.
But Luffy has made his choice, and so has Blackbeard. They are two sides of the same coin, which is why it’s important that Blackbeard says this line here, and not Luffy.
