Now you know this was Shinsou's greatest joy to do.
Rambling about Fairies - Manga Chapter 181-182
So, one thing I find myself pleasantly surprised by while reading the manga version of Edolas is Hughes.
In the anime he’s just the doofus with a rather annoying speech pattern, and that makes me rather not like him because he feels very surface level and gimmicky.
But in the manga-- he shows up, hauntingly asking them a question. And when we actually fight him, we see that he’s not just the goofy dude that likes to mess around and speak in ‘fer real, like, fer real’ blabber.
In the anime he smiles and plays around the whole time he says these lines. In the manga, he’s serious. He’s genuinely annoyed. He really hates the Earthlanders for being able to enjoy their magic while they run out in Edolas.
It gives him a depth.
It honestly makes me rather happy to know that Erza and Pantherlily aren’t the only serious ones in the royal army. It’s Sugar Boy and Coco that are the off ones out, not the other way around. Hughes is also capable of fooling around, but he knows when to be serious, too.
(Also, I love that for both Hughes and Erza, when their murder is questioned, they take a moment, before answering with a smile. It makes me like the idea that they know, somewhere inside, that it’s wrong, but they’re willing to dirty their hands for the greater good because they’re in too deep now.)
Also, my previous observation justifies Hughes’ stone-faced calm reaction to Lucy’s seduction tactic. He knows when’s the time for nonsense and he’s honestly just baffled they tried.
Other theory is gay but both are funny to me
Ch183, Cover art preview
From iBooks, but it’s only listed for preorder, and I don’t like doing preorders anymore.
Since the image is scorched, we should definitely get more info about the attack and fire at their farm. 😞

yana has this special gift of creating deep characters who lived through traumatic events. with every good gift comes the question what else can she do? baldroy had a traumatic past. who would have thought. in case she and her team decide on new characters guess what their past looks like? (this is not meant in a bad way, just some observation). i cant wait for this arc to be over and for r!ciel and undertaker to return. there the real interesting stuff lies. not with the side characters....
now take it apart internet idiots

War by itself is terrible enough, but for someone who’s spent months trying to prevent this battle in the first place, this must be like walking into a nightmares. Kudos to Oda for portraying this little moment well
