Yona branded Hak as hers. The necklace she gave him was to protect him but I also think in many ways it was a way to connect them together. That necklace is a part of Hak. It will be a constant reminder to him that she gave it in order to protect him, something people don’t forget easily. We give gifts like jewelry and rings in order to show to others that this person is ours.  I am not saying Yona is treating Hak like her property, what I mean is that it is a warning sign so that other people know he belongs to her. Covertly anyway, it’s more so he knows that he belongs to her. 

Yona has mentioned it many times through out varies moments in the series that Hak is different compared to other people for her, he is someone important, someone she wants to protect, someone who makes her feel safe and at home. Unconsciously, she is pretty much saying she loves Hak every single time she says these things, it’s just it isn’t until she gave him a physical manifestation of her feelings that she took notice of her feelings.

 It makes me wonder, I do think that Soo-won loved Yona, it’s just his goals in life made him have to choose between the people he loved and his dreams. In many ways you could say that by giving the hairpin to Yona, he branded her to him. It’s a thread of connection between each other. They will never be far apart. It makes sense on why she doesn't wear the hairpin as really it was the day her fantasy turned into a nightmare. By not wearing it she shows that her heart does not belong to him, however, he is still a part of her memories. In a way you can say, the pin is a reminder that she can never forget what she lost that day on her 16th birthday.

Though what interests me is that even though Yona said she would not fall in love, she has. It is clear as day. I adore her relationship with Hak. She can be so honest and open with him, and get as crazy mad as she wants or crazy protective of him too. Like think about it, since she almost lost Hak, has done everything in her power in order to come closer to him, so she can protect him. So, they can be equal. Really, these too should just get married already. 

In many ways, I think Yona doesn’t feel like she is right for Hak. Think about it, from her perspective, her father asked him to protect her. He died and as Hak was loyal towards her father, it makes sense that he would carry out his wish. Furthermore, he chose to stay and protect her, leaving everything he knew in the Wind Tribe behind. Let that sink in. While Hak thinks he has no right to love her, she doesn't think she can have him. Their is this world in the middle were they are more than friends but less than lovers. These two are more alike then they think.
