Luffy’s absolute inability to get anyone’s name right, even people he likes, returns in this arc, of course. He starts out always calling Shirahoshi 弱虫/yowamushi (weakling/scaredy cat) up until he decides she’s not really a weakling, just a crybaby, at which point he switches to calling her よわほし/yowahoshi, as a combination of his previous nickname and her name.
And then, going off of that, he addresses Fukaboshi as 兄ほし/anihoshi- from Shirahoshi’s name and the word 兄/ani, which means ‘older brother.’ And Fukaboshi just lets him, which I find delightful. He also calls Decken 色々投げる奴/iroiro nageru yatsu, literally “throwing-a-lot-of-stuff-guy.”
And yet he does manage to get Hody’s name right. Maybe because it’s so short.
