Hello! I have a question about the title of the most recent chapter.
The scans translated it as “The Ebb and Flow of the Ages”, which is the same phrase used in Roger’s quote all the best back in Chapter 100 in the official translation. (Very cool!!)
However, the official translated the title as “The Upheaval of the Era”.
I guess my question is this: what is the phrase used back in Chapter 100 and is it the same as this week’s chapter title? And how would you translate it?
it is the same phrase, yes! it was actually a little funny because the early leaked raws this week were missing the front page, so i didn't get to see the title in japanese, but when i saw how tcb had translated it, i instantly was like 'oh, the japanese title must be 時代のうねり!' and it was!
うねり/uneri is an interesting word, and one i haven't really seen used much in other contexts. it refers to a movement of like... rolling, undulating, swelling, heaving; from what i've seen it generally evokes the motion of waves. and 時代/jidai means era(s)/age(s). so the idea being conveyed is the 'swelling/heaving up (like waves)' of the ages. (i get a sense of history as an ocean that can't be controlled from this line.)
so, 'the upheaval of an era' is also a correct way to translate this, and i like it a lot as a translation that feels somewhat more violent and active, but i think the 'ebb and flow' translation better conveys the nautical connotations of the original phrase.
