Challenge: Building and Land Management Information Transparency
Build apps that promote business development or public awareness by providing information on permit, inspection, and other land management activity.
Example Apps:
‘Neighbors In-the-Know’: A mobile app that lets citizens know what types of construction are proposed or in progress within their local neighborhood. Citizens armed with this knowledge can plan for street closures or power outages, address construction noise issues, and comment on proposed development.
‘Permit-It or Not?’: A mobile app that lets citizens research DIY-Home projects and determine whether permits or inspections are required in order to complete the work. Citizens may also check for compliance with zoning laws and apply for and pay for required permits and inspections.
‘Landcestry’: A mobile app that lets the public research historical land parcel information. Learn the age of buildings, remodel and retrofitting history, and how the land was developed over time. Identify historical landmarks and protected sites. This app brings parcel genealogy to life and is useful for property owners, apartment dwellers, real estate professionals or just curious citizens.
Sign up for a free Accela Developer account by going to https://mobile.accela.com/Developer. This will give you access to the Accela Developer Portal containing data sets, SDKs and documentation on the Accela platform.

Challenge: Affordable Housing
Help us create a website for affordable housing!
We have some sample housing listings collected here.
Challenge: Square Plate
SquarePlate is an emerging San Francisco organization building a community of local food businesses and consumers committed to environmental and social accountability. SquarePlate offers businesses a transparent and comprehensive way to certify and promote business practices that benefit society and the environment, including those for safety, nutritious food, healthy working conditions, community benefits, food sourcing, and resource conservation. Participating SquarePlate businesses are also able to share experiences and practices with each other. SquarePlate certification provides food consumers a transparent way to identify and support these high-performing restaurants.
Twenty-five San Francisco restaurants are already committed SquarePlate early-adopters. Squareplate is seeking support in designing of a web interface that communicates the value of sustainable food business practices, profiles Squareplate certified restaurants with their accomplishments, and allows consumers to engage in the development and advancement of future sustainable practices promoted by SquarePlate.
See the Square Plate tool and the Square Plate website.

Challenge: Tracking Tool for Education and Outreach
A tablet optimized tool that can help with tracking and monitoring outreach and education activities related to Covered California (Califonia's health benefits exchange).
Challenge: Directory of Services for HEC
A web-based directory for the Homeless Employment Collaborative, a group of 10 organizations trying to find employment opportunities for homeless clients.
We need a directory that will allow organizations to update their information, list classes (including start dates or previous training required, etc), and find other organizations' information.
Challenge: Social Media for Employment Services
HSA is able to offer clients a wide range of employment and training opportunities. In recent years, between the expansion of established training programs and increased funding for subsidized employment, the range and breadth of these programs has mushroomed. Employment Specialists handle large caseloads and need quick and easy-to-access information about all of the opportunities available to their clients. Currently, Employment Specialists have to access multiple sources of information to find about which employment opportunities have current openings or when the next cohort of clients will start new training programs. Old methods of distributing information, like email, are not meeting current needs.
We would like to create an online tool showing the different opportunities available to employment specialists and their clients. A tool built on the model of social networking sites (or perhaps even building on the CCSF use of Yammer) might prove helpful. We want staff to have an easier time finding resources and also to give clients themselves more autonomy as they select the best employment or training opportunities for them and their families.
