Canada has boundless technical ambition and talent.
In 1953, Canada set out to build one of the most ambitious aircraft of the Cold War.
The result was the Avro Arrow — a delta-wing interceptor that could reach 50,000 feet and Mach 1.98, powered by a homegrown engine that was, at the time, the most powerful in North America. When the first Arrow rolled out in 1957, it was a statement of what Canadian engineering could achieve.
In 1959, the program was cancelled. The reasons were as much strategic as financial. Every aircraft was then cut up for scrap and the blueprints destroyed, officially to guard against espionage. The engineers behind it scattered, many going on to NASA, where they helped design the spacecraft that carried astronauts to the Moon.
The Arrow was never a failure of engineering. It was a world-beating aircraft. Decades later, it remains a defining lesson in Canadian aerospace, proof of the talent this country can produce, and a reminder of why sustained investment in defence innovation matters.
