Cermaq announced in a press release a collaboration with Labeyrie and the IBM Food Trust platform to enable customers to get information about the salmon supply chain. All Cermaq products now come with a CV and QR code, so consumers can check a variety of data, including " the origin of the fish, the source of fresh water when grown, the size when moved to seawater, as well as information about the health of the individual, what vaccinations it received and what it was fed."

Labeyrie deployed a tracking system for two smoked salmon products, allowing consumers to see information about the entire fish production chain-from caviar to store. Cermaq Norway sales Director Brede Løfsgaard said the project was partly driven by customer demand for greater transparency.

When Cermaq tried to anchor a new farm in Ahousaht territory in a bay called Yaakswiis, Ahousaht people stepped on the farm and told the Cermaq crew to leave (see previous post).   Thus began a 9 – day occupation of the farm, meetings between Ahousaht and their leadership and support from hundreds of people throughout British Columbia, Canada and beyond. There was a rally of support in Vancouver on September 18.

Called the Yaakswiis Ocean Camp, led by Lennie John, Sacheem Seitcham, and Joe John Crow the fish farm was also occupied by supporters such as Clayoquot Action, Friends of Clayoquot Sound and independent biologist Alexandra Morton.

“This is a victory, says Lennie John, an Ahousaht tourism owner/operator, “I wanted to protect the Atleo River and the salmon for our future generations. We are just waiting to witness the removal of the floats and anchors as this is now a protected site. Cermaq is done here.”

After much discussion and communications with Ahousaht people and Cermaq Canada, the Ha’wiih and Chief & Council of Ahousaht came out with a statement of support for the removal of the new Cermaq farm at Yaakswiis.

Members of a Vancouver Island First Nation are vowing to risk arrest rather than allow an international fish farming company to anchor an open-net salmon farm north of Tofino.

The Ahousaht First Nation say they set up a boat blockade Wednesday at the site of the new farm, owned by Norwegian-based Cermaq.

The Ahousaht say the company holds 17 salmon farm tenures in Clayoquot Sound and applied for two new tenures in the same area last year.

The First Nation believes the applications signal a new round of fish farm expansion on the West Coast, with the Ahousaht Fish Farm Committee predicting a four-fold increase in the industry over the next 15 years.

Protesters oppose any new fish farms in the area.
