Cellhavoc - Despised
#109 - Some harsher grooves. Cellhavoc and Gravastar
It’s been a while. Sry for that. Plans were a bit different but events outside of this wonderful circuit-based contraption of data streams made it hard for me to write up anything worthwhile. But that also means I have some backlog now that I need to take care of.
But let’s start with some stuff of slightly more actuality. I posted a lot of more melodically oriented stuff recently, so this might actually be kind of refreshing, as the two projects I have for you today definitely belong to the harsher spectrum of Modern Metal.
Though, it isn’t actually that obvious if this first one, Cellhavoc, even does fall into Modern Metal, to be honest. But it has a similar feel to it and I recommended Rave The Reqviem and especially Drone Unit in the past, so it probably fits in well enough. Cellhavocs first album “Consumed By Eternal Darkness” had a pretty strong electronic vibe and leaning, of the ebm and aggrotech variety, which would make it a clear mention on a straight up Industrial blog but feel slightly off-topic here. The Finnish two man projects recently released second album “Only Flith Remains”, on the other hand, has a pretty strong Metal leaning with a very guitar driven sound. It still retains its harsh electronic side, too, though, which leads to a very gritty, cold, viciously mechanical mixture that actually reminds me of a lot of a less electronic Drone Unit. Vocals follow suit. If that sounds good to you, be sure to lend it an ear:

Second item of the day are Gravastar. I’ve known of this projects existence for a qwhile now but didn’t really manage to get a good listen of their music. Which became a hell of a lot easier today, as they’ve released their recent album “Genetic Genesis” on bandcamp. The albums songs are mostly based on dry, thumping rhythmic riffs, layered with melodies mostly delivered by synths and keys. So, while it has an slightly Proggy Symphonic vibe to it, it also has a strong Industrial undercurrent that rather makes it fall into the realm of Modern Metal, I think. Vocals are harsh 99% of the time and a tiny bit monotonous, but that’s my personal preference speaking, of course. But it definitely has some cool Industrial-y riffs and a lot of space adventure-y atmosphere to offer. So, give it a listen:
