I can't stand Felicity, but breaking up with a man because he lied about having a son is not something she should feel guilty about.
Exactly!Ā
This is a bit of a rambleĀ but I had a conversation with a friend about that - she was going on and on about how it was selfish for Felicity to break up with Oliver and our conversation went like this:Ā
Her:Ā āFelicity is so dumb. Your fiance is the Green Arrow, and youāre going to break up with him over this? He wasnāt allowed to tell!āĀ Me:Ā āMarybeth. He had a son. And he didnāt tell his fiance. Why is it so weird for her to break up with him because she doesnāt feel trusted?āHer:Ā āHeās a vigilante! He has secrets; she should know that!āĀ Me:Ā āHe didnāt tell her about his child. Or even let on that he had a secret. How would you honestly feel if you were in her place and your fiance didnāt tell you? If you were prepared to spend the rest of your life with this person who didnāt tell you about something pretty big and were gonna let you get married without even giving you a clue about this.āĀ Her: [honest to god 30 second pause]Ā āWell. Heās Green Arrow so-āĀ Me: -_-Ā āEven if heās the Green Arrow.āHer:Ā āFine. Iād break up with him too.ā [10 second pause]Ā āFelicityās still stupid though.āĀ
And, that was the response most of my friends had lol, from those who loved Felicity/Olicity to those who hated Felicity/Olicity and itās just...something I cannot wrap my head around at all. Theyāre going to get married, sheās going to commit to him with the expectation that this is a lifelong commitment, yet people act as if she has just...no right to be angry that she wasnāt told? I know if I was engaged or married (or, dating someone for a long time as thatās certainly not any less important than being married) and my significant other didnāt tell me Iād be pissed. Yes, Oliver didnāt have to tell her - after all, it wasnāt his choice, and as Williamās mother, Samantha sets the rules, and thatās fair enough. But Oliver didnāt tell Felicity he had a secret that he simply couldnāt tell her, or give any indication to her about the fact that he was hiding something, and was going to marry her regardless, and I think Felicity is 100% right in feeling like she couldnāt trust him for that, and if I were in her place, Iād absolutely think the same thing.Ā
And that post saying itās the writing - I completely agree. The writing was supposed to make us feel sympathetic to Oliver and well, it worked. Because every friend who I spoke to, when I asked them how they would react, would concede that theyād do the same thing. And yet, somehow, people who would do the same thing as Felicity watched the show and immediately harped on Felicity for leaving when she was being lied to. And that irritates the hell out of me.
I feel for Oliver, sure, and I agree that he was stuck between a rock and a hard place in a sense, but he still messed up and that should have been acknowledged more. And as for Felicity,Ā she is definitely not a character above criticism. She has flaws, and there are so, so many writing decisions that were done with her that I hate and there are things with her character and Olicity that the writers did that Iāve spoken about disliking. This post isnāt meant to be a āexcuse every single thing Felicity has done everā post, and while I love Felicity, I understand why others donāt.Ā But to hate on her for this? Hating or criticizing Felicity for leaving a relationship when Oliver lied to her is shitty and honestly, the more I think about it, itās more than a little sexist.Ā
