I do recommend Demon’s Dance by Zimina bc while I cannot particulary remember /gender/ fuckery per se I’d be deeply surprised if there’s none at all, too much gay density per square centimeter of text, and she absolutely writes based on the principle of “this is going to be badass as hell”
I HAVE A MACAQUE THEORY. He didn't die but he was actually dragged by his own shadows in a shadow realm (*snorts* send you to a shadow realm) after a fight with SWK. During the fight he pressed his power too hard and it got out of control. He still was terribly injured so when his own shadows turned against him he couldn't do shit.
Also it's probably because Macaque was shure if not in victory but at least that their brawl will come to a draw, or that he'll be able to escape. He underestimated SWK ofcourse. So when none of that happened and he was struck down he felt despair, fear and probably disappointment. And you know how it is with dark shadowy power holders – they always play with your mind and bring out your worst feelings. But if a holder of that power gets swallowed by the same feelings ofcourse the power won't listen to them anymore.
So LBD found Macaque bound by his own powers in a dark place and was like: hippity hoppity you're now my property
But got bamboozled by Macaque running away. Which is like DUH who frees a shadow master without a proper contract bounding the bitch.
And the rest is history.

Well you also met the third person. I can't speak my first language without mixing it with English. Sometimes I just modify English words so they sounds like my native language but actually can be understanded only by people who know English.
