Been a long day. For the entire week I have grown used to my own company. Went to the movies alone. Had dinner alone. Drank coffee or had tea while reading alone. I am slowly learning to be independent from my “comfort people”, the ones whose faces appear in most of my photos, whose company I have grown used to and crave and long for every so often, whose presence I have found joy in. But to be the one to laugh at my own silly observations of people and places and things I used to ignore or overlook when I was with someone, to be the one to notice me when my thoughts wander elsewhere, to be the first to comfort my in my solitude (because, honestly, it’s not easy or comfortable at first, especially that I’ve grown used to being around people for most of the time), to be the first, to prioritize me, to choose me, is something I have taught myself and learned these past week. It’s unnerving for the first few days, sad even, but I have grown to love listening to my thoughts and taking the time to be by myself and to be myself. But now, I get to appreciate time with people as much as with myself. I don’t mope around when people cancel plans with me anymore. I don’t feel sad going to places and doing things alone; I am starting to enjoy it. And I think it has helped me learn to say no to things that don’t sit right in my soul, to things that don’t, as Marie Kondo would say, “spark joy”, and to keep myself away from people who do not make me feel emotionally safe or comfortable. I’m 24. There’s a lot of growing to do, and a whole life ahead of me. The years stretch their arms to me, welcoming me into a hopeful tomorrow. And I’m thrilled by the thought of it. I’m excited.
